Student Run Los Angeles Research Paper
Waking up at six in the morning on a Sunday is not typical, especially so when it is to run ten miles. However, this is how I have been spending my Sunday mornings for the past three years. I am a member of Students Run Los Angeles (SRLA), an organization that provides students the opportunity to run the LA Marathon. It is thanks to SRLA that I have been able to complete two marathons and am currently in training to complete my third. SRLA has not only taught me the importance of setting goals in life, but the character skills required to achieve those goals. As most marathon runners will tell you, the greatest obstacle in running is not the physical pain, but the battle with your mind. SRLA has taught me to break down mental barriers by reinforcing the lessons of persistence. By practicing multiple days every week and having multiple races leading to the marathon, I have learned that accomplishment does not happen overnight, but rather with continuous hard work. SRLA has taught me to believe in my abilities and to look forward in the task ahead. Most importantly, it has taught me to approach any task with a “can do” attitude as anything else will lead to failure. …show more content…
The energy you I feel when waiting at the start line with 20,000 people who share a common goal is unbelievable. Running through the streets of Los Angeles gives me a different perspective on the city I thought I knew. Above all, running a marathon allowed me to discover more about myself, as you are alone with your thoughts. When completely drained of all physical and mental strength, you discover the drive that motivates you to keep on moving. As a marathon finisher, this drive has led to the realization that I can do anything I set my mind

It was incredible to see the channeling of so much effort and focus result in the exact achievement I had aimed for. As great a feeling as it was to have accomplished something I had dreamed of, it was far from completely satisfying. It was not long before the glory of one good championship race was erased and replaced with the anticipation of the next. Running has shown me that the only limits holding me back are the ones I entertain. My capabilities are in fact limitless and I can achieve anything I set my mind to.…

San Diego is designated as the first county in the western United States after having been settled by Europeans. Today, the San Diego region has greater numbers of endangered species of plant and animals than any other comparable continental landmass in the United States. Its rapid urban sprawl into more remote areas increases the need for conservation of land and water resources (SANDAG).…

From the sounds of it, the writer is not particularly fond of training, especially running. He tells us quite bluntly, that he would much rather relax on the sofa, beer in hand and watch football on TV. He describes running as torture, not fun as his 'marathon friends ' describe it. One of the reasons I think he decided to sign up to do the Comrades ultra marathon, was because of the guilt he felt of being a gym member for 5 years, and hardly using the facilities. I genuinely think the writer hates training.…

But, one year later, the city had and obvious recovery. The spirit that had been absolutely crushed not one year prior, soared higher than ever before. The energy in Boston on race weekend was on a level that I haven’t before. The Boston Marathon was, and always will be, an event that should be on everyone’s bucket list. The experience serves to inspire, motivate and uplift all those who participate in the weekend. You don’t have to be a sports fan or even a runner. You simply have to appreciate the will power that human beings can instill within one…

Though I had not meant for it, running has become representative of me, whether I like it or not. It’s my individualism, and in a time when everyone strives to be unique, it’s also my common link to normalcy. So why is is a big deal? Well, I have found that individualism is nearly always encouraged, but only as long as it’s done with compliant undertones. The fine line between sheer brilliance and utter insanity is in fact the one thing that makes both impossible: a link to the social ordinary. It’s quite the paradox, in which I have yet to find a middle ground. But at this time, everyone seems to be looking for…

An accomplishment that I am very proud of and believe is a strong example of my dedication is the following. When I was twelve I trained for and completed a half marathon. I finished with a time of 1:42 and won the eighteen and under age group. My training for this race included running, biking, and weightlifting. Every night, many times by myself and other times with my mother, I would go out and run or workout. I remember going out Christmas Eve for interval training and then rushing home to make sure I did not miss the Christmas Eve service. The next year I completed another half marathon in 1:32 averaging a 7:09 mile pace. Last year I traveled to Florida to run the Disney Half Marathon and completed it in 1:22 averaging a 6:18 mile. Through hard work and dedication I got 45th out of over 22,000 runners in Disney.…

Later that night my mother told me that even if you don't succeed at first just give it time and practice and eventually you will thrive. The following year I went out for the team again and practiced each day, giving it my all remembering how to control my breathing and when to push through the pain. As the cross country season went on and improved my time, and running form, determined to succeed in the future. I have always been a believer in hard work, and I find the harder I work, the more determined I'm to succeed. My last three years of running I made the district team and became a medalist of central Massachusetts as well as a divisional medalist. Views on practice may differ but it does not make you better, it's the attitude and mentality you put into your practice that truly makes a runner flourish. In brief life throws all sorts of challenges in your way not just in sports but in everyday activities. However success is not final it's a water station to refuel your mind and continue on life's journey, failure is not the end, it's just a horrible race, but the will to practice on after an awful race is what…

During my time running cross country last year, I attempted to push myself and inspire those around me. Even after the season had ended I wanted to push myself just a bit farther; I accomplished this by running a half marathon. After I had finished, my fellow teammates who did not run felt inspired by me, and they were sure that they wanted to run the same half marathon after the next season. Having inspired them, I felt as if I accomplished much more than running a half marathon. I was able to take a small part in leading them to their future…

For the past six years of my life, I ran for the Eureka Springs High School cross country team. After graduation, I was given the opportunity to run for the Golden Suns cross country team at Arkansas Tech University. In a matter of six months, my cross country experiences and habits were changed. Often times, there are similarities between two subjects such as these, but in this case, only the differences are obvious. There are changes in not only the way that I run, but the team I ran with, the coach I ran under, and the person I am when I run. These changes have caused me to see what I can do as a runner and a college student.…

As the old saying goes, “Those who can’t, teach.” Those are the precise words that got Bill Saunders to where he is today. As a child he spent his entire life growing up in the same brown colored house in Alpine, Utah. While in high school Bill decided to join the track team as a fun after school activity with his friends. He had never truly enjoyed running before so his expectations for the season weren’t exactly high by any means. Bill decided to join the long distance team his first season in ninth grade. Bill recalls contemplating quitting the team after the extreme amounts of pain he had been in after the first week. However, his mother, being the pushy, strong, good example in his life that he had needed, told him that if you start something, you must finish it, “I didn’t raise quitters!” He took his mothers words to heart and from that point he changed his mind set about track and went forth with the rest of the season having the goal of getting the school record for the one mile run. “It was a lot of hard work and I remember going to practice some days feeling like absolute garbage, but I knew what I had to do if I was ever going to reach my goals, so I stuck to it, and did just that.” At the end of his first track season, Bill had in fact broken the school record for the…

Endurance is something more than ability to continue in a race or workout, endurance is about pushing the boundaries to their limits both mentally and physically. Like outer space, endurance can grow and amaze even the greatest scientist of the human body. In Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken, Laura writes, “Time ticked on, and still Louie remained in the same position, conscious and yet not, the beam over his head, his eyes on the Bird’s face, enduring long past when strength should have given out.” The quote gives an idea about how athletes use thoughts like these to continue to go further and stronger. Many athletes, like Louie…

These were a few of the signs I saw as I competed in the Top Of Utah marathon two weeks ago. “How much further do I have to go?”……”Will I still have toenails when I finish?” ……”How old was that lady that just passed me?” These were the thoughts that ran through my head that morning. It might be hard to convince people hoping to loose a few pounds or get in shape to run a few miles, but very few are willing to entertain the thought of running 26 miles and competing in a marathon.…
