Personal Narrative: Trumpet
Instruments of all sizes laid out in front of me, so many choices. My impulsive hands quickly picked up a trumpet. It wasn’t my ideal instrument, I preferred the princess look associated with playing the flute, but I aspired to achieve the swagger of the high school trumpet jocks above me. Likewise, my older brother was a woodwind, so naturally I had to pick an instrument opposite of his. At ten years old, my tiny hands could barely grasp the valves, obviously meant for someone much larger than me. The cold mouthpiece felt foreign on my lips. I squeezed my embouchure and produced a sound so wretched you could almost mistake it for an animal. The grotesque squawk caught me by surprise. I pulled my mouth away and giggled, slightly embarrassed. I began to question my impulsive decision. Maybe I made the wrong choice. A man in front of me cracked a lovable smile and roared a deep contagious laugh. I blushed, initially thinking he was laughing at the ridiculous noise I made. “What a confident sound, I can tell you are going to go far” he chuckled, “Welcome …show more content…
Today, I sit on stage surrounded by my closest friends who share the same passion as I do. Sitting under the blazing spotlight, I anxiously wait with a fluttering stomach for the cue of my director’s animated hands to start. With the stroke of her hand downward, my mind clears from the stress of school and I can solely focus on making music. I play the grandiose music with enough passion to give the audience goose bumps (the good kind). Now, in marching band, I march for countless hours under the cool fall nights, or blistering summer afternoons with fellow band geeks. Like a big machine, with all the parts working together, each individual person forms to make miscellaneous designs. With sweat dripping down my red cheeks, I play my last note with power until my lungs burn. I break into a wide smile, hearing the roar of applause from the audience above

In my youth, I hated music. I hated how other kids my age were out having fun while I stayed home on the piano bench. I hated the monotony of completing exercises every day on the piano: twelve major scales, and thirty-six minor scales, forty-eight arpeggios, and chord progressions in twelve keys for a grand total of 108 different permutations. After all, what was the point? This wasn’t going to land me a job anywhere. Little did I know that this was my future. It is October 2015 during halftime of a football game. The band director bores through the amalgamation of fellow band students then sits behind me on the edge of the wet bleachers. He speaks rapidly to me about the upcoming musical production and the necessity of a keyboard…

In Zora Neale Hurston's, Their Eyes Were Watching God, the concept of power is heavily emphasized throughout the novel. Although Joe “Jody” Starks, a man full of confidence and aspiration, became the mayor of the black town of Eatonville, he had an obsession for power and control that led to destruction.…

Juliet uses many metaphors and allusions to demonstrate or describe her thoughts and lust for Romeo. She begins her riddle of allusions by asking phaeton’ s carriage to bring in the dark of night for Romeo to arrive in this quote(3.2.2) “ Toward Phoebus lodging such a wagoner driver.” . She then thinks of how fast the night will come and how much she wants the night to come in this following saying of Juliet (3.2.4)“ bring in the cloudy night immediately.” . Romeo is supposed to come to Juliet at night, by climbing up the ladder. She hopes when he climbs up the ladder he will do what Juliet says in this following line (3.2.7) “ Leap to these arms untalked of and unseen.” She is anxiously dreaming and thinking of her husband arrival.…

    Bob Hope Band Scholarship

From his first steps on the vaudeville stage, to his last USO show, Bob Hope was entertaining. Mr. Hope was a comedian and an actor, yet he still reached an unmatchable caliber of musical ability. While his talents were far greater than mine, I still feel that there are many similarities between us. His love of music inspired me to appreciate its role in my life even more. Since I began playing the saxophone in seventh grade, music has been one of the centers of my life. I compete, perform and most importantly, practice on a consistent basis. The band program at my high school is poorly funded, and thus offers few opportunities in the way of musical challenges. However, because of my love of music and feeling of obligation to my classmates, I continue to be an active member and hold the position of drum major. To further challenge myself, I auditioned for and was accepted to the Louisville Youth Orchestra saxophone ensemble. This ensemble challenges my abilities and requires me to often seek help from my private instructor. While my performances with this ensemble may not be perfect, due to the level of difficulty of the music, I…

Coordination plays a key roll in marching. A lot of teamwork goes into it as well. All the musicians have to play in the right key, stay in step, and stay musically in time or else the entire show could be compromised. Memorizing game plays is a large roll in football and other team sports, same with band. You must remember the basic notes, key signatures, and various other musical symbols. Then there are the hundreds of sets, or where and when you have to be on the field during the show. Just one person off can throw off the entire form or melody.…

This was second time I listen to a Jazz concert in our school. Our players always keep a high quality of performance. Besides this relaxed type of performance I also used to go to Chopin’s symphony and other different kind of operas. Listen to a concert performed in the school and played by our schoolmates seems to be more joyful and comfortable. Our players might do not have a professional techniques or organized as the technical symphony orchestra. But their enjoyable and love of music are same which can bring our audience into their atmosphere and move our body along with their playing.…

Marching band is analogous to a machine. All of the components must properly function in order to complete a certain task. Therefore, each member should possess dedication in order to produce a triumphant show and capture the audience’s attention. If one member fails, the whole organization collapses. Through these experiences, I learned that determination and dedication contributes to a successful lifestyle. Otherwise, dreams could never exist.…

As a member of nearly two years with Seminole, I have been able to experience an atmosphere of genuine love and acceptance that I now hope to further encourage and foster. This will be my sixth year as a part of the marching arts, during which I have had the privilege of playing and marching for two different ensembles, as well as maintaining leadership roles in both (leading two front ensembles and being relied on heavily at my place of prior attendance). With all the time I have dedicated to learning and plying my craft, I now seek to instill in others that same sense of wonder, amazement, and motivation that…

Many people have heard the saying, there is no I in team. Like any sport, a band can not function through one person alone. While marching, if I did not work together with the other members of the band, it would be a disaster. Marchers would be running into one another, and the music would not line up together. It took everyone working together as one to create a masterpiece.…

Sweat drizzles down my skin as it exits my pores trying to cool my heated body. The blood rushes through my veins pumping blood with the consistent pounding of my heart. Every breath, every second, every action, every thought; I am standing where everything counts. Artificial turf and grass crumpled beneath my torn black shoes and the thick silence only cut by the timed chants from afar. This is the last moment I will stand here for this reason. This is the last moment I will stand here with my family. This is the last moment of my marching band career. Many will say that this was a special group of kids, others will say that this year was a show that was made to make it. I, on the other hand, will say that this was because of seven years of dedication.…

Immediately wanting to join the band, I knew the only obstacle in my way would be convincing my parents. After all, neither one of them is musical in any way. At dinner that night, it was obvious that they were skeptical and not too keen on the idea of hearing the banging of a drum set in their home, but they ultimately gave me the chance to pursue this new-found passion. At that time, none of us could have imagined the impact that this decision would have on my life moving forward.…

My love for music began in middle school. At that time, I was socially awkward with very few friends. To compensate, I buried myself in music. My dedication led to many honors and admiration from my peers. However, when I got to high school, my relationship with music fundamentally changed. The arrival of an overly demanding teacher coupled with a long episode of depression robbed me of my passion to play. As time progressed, the pain I felt became too much to bear, and I became desperate for an outlet in which I could express myself positively. My quest led me to music once more, but classical was no longer the genre of choice. It was in hip hop and rap music that I found the will to overcome mental illness.…
