Personal Narrative: Westside Relay For Life
“Work hard, dream big, do the impossible, and fly to the stars.” These are the words I always heard from my Father when I was growing up. From time to time, I face challenges, ones that would literally make me break down and cry. As I sob to my last tears, my father’s voice would echo through my mind, a distant voice from the past, that would propel me to run after the invisible silhouette in front of me. “No moment should be wasted, and I should live my life to the fullest,” I whispered.
Back in my middle school years, I was only a person living to please others, such as making good grades to make my parents proud. As I entered high school, I kept my insecurities packed away, and concealed it with a smile. One night, a friend took me to Fuse at NewSpring Church, the preacher taught, “For God so loved the

I would carve out room in my already-crowded schedule to go out of my way to give back to my community. I have so far, completed over fifteen hours of service for Westside Relay for Life from raising money, running 5ks, to raising cancer awareness. Last year, as a junior, I step up to be the Vice President of BETA Club and Secretary for NHS for my senior year. I was selected as a runner-up math star student in the region. I participated in Palmetto Girls State, which matured my leadership and speaking skills. I also went to Gauntlet with my church and my perspective has broadened and sharpened to allow me to see myself as a growing young leader in my community. I have ran track and field for my high school since my sophomore year, earning a varsity letter my first year. Sometimes, the vigorous life on finding a balance between school, sports, active volunteering, and work would throw me off the beam, but I would continue moving forward. After all, life is a continuous opportunity to work hard, be a role model, a leader, a giver, and a friend to

As the details in this essay illustrate the people who fail are the ones, who’s bigger than they are, and those who prevail, face a problem that’s manageable. In these chapters we have learned that many people need help for they can succeed in life. Adversity around the world around us is very difficult. Prevailing isn’t easy, you have to try enough to get there. If I were a character in the book Tears of a Tiger, I would tell Andy “Feel your heart is it beating? That’s the whole purpose of it, you’ve made it this far through a lot stuff, can’t quit now never quit”!…

When we think we can't push anymore, we can push a little harder. When we think we're done, we're not. Our society has grown up under the impression that we aren't good enough, we're not strong enough, or we're not fast enough. So ever since I've heard that, I have pushed harder than I thought was possible, pushed past the limit. However at the same time it also personally impacts me because in the concentration camps they had to persevere, a lot. And I can relate a lot to perseverance because I have grown up swimming and the hard practices take a lot of perseverance. “Night” by Elie Wiesel teaches us all to persevere through the hard times and push ourselves past the limit. This is why I chose this…

I walked on a thin layer of ice in high school; every time someone judged me, I could hear the ice slowly cracking under my feet. My life was in a fragile and brittle state during my junior year. I didn’t have the support of my parents, nor of my closest friends at this stage of my life. My own parents, teachers, and classmates had lost faith in me; to them it seemed as if I had ruined my life and that I would no longer succeed. On the contrary, I was determined to be successful because now I had someone special looking up at me as their role model.…

Some of the things that I am involved with outside of school would be the Make-A-Wish foundation, Tutoring, and activities with my church. I have learned a lot about my self through volunteering with these activities and have grown as a person. I would encourage everyone to try and pick one volunteer group that they feel passionate about and spend time-sharing your talents with it. I know it is something that you will not regret doing.…

Something very important to me in my life is service and that is why throughout my life I also plan to remain involved in the act of helping others in need. Throughout high school I have belonged to a youth group that’s has gone a mission trip every summer, and on these trips I have had some of the most meaningful experiences of my life which have really made me realize how good my life is, and how important it is to share your talents, abilities, and time with others who may not be as fortunate as yourself.…

“If you want to have a life that is worth living, a life that expresses your deepest feelings and cares and dreams, you have to fight for it.” That’s what Alice Walke said. Through the Dream unit, we have looked at evidence in books, articles, watched videos, and listened to speeches. Some people have achieved their dreams, and others haven’t. While our dreams might not come true, it is worth it to dream because it will bring us happiness, our dreams can come true, and dreaming can inspire others.…

“You’ll never make it,” they all said, my boyfriend, family, teachers, and friends. It was like my life was already figured out for me, as if I didn’t have a say. The message was loud and clear. They all expected me to fail, to settle for a minimum wage paying job, to settle for just a high school diploma. For a while I went around believing that all I could do was the minimum required. But then I realized that I was capable of doing so much more. As time went on I realized that I did not have to live up to other’s low expectations and I started making a name for myself. I knew that studying a little harder for every test, joining clubs, volunteering, and running for leadership positions would later pay off.…

My biggest commitment would have to be as a Link Crew Leader. The Link Program started in California and has since spread to over 2000 schools across the world. It’s designed with all incoming grade nines being broken into groups of 8-10 students and 30-40 senior students being broken into groups of 2-3. The seniors are then matched with a group of grade nines to form a Link Group. The senior students are the grade nines connection to the rest of the school and they go through intensive leadership training so they can then help the grade nines with their transition to high school. I have been a link leader for the past two…

Coming from there, I found my world had been shattered and I had to start from scratch. I found that everything I knew had now been split into three. My life at home was rigorous and hard. My mother’s expectations of me were harsh but I thank her because without her regulations, my life at school would have been different. Maybe without her given structure of my life early on, I wouldn't have risen to become valedictorian of my school. Even though I did all the work and put in all the hours on my own free will, her expectations and my fear of letting them down motivated me when I felt like I reach “good enough”. Thanks to that, I found that life at school was relatively smooth and I was able to do well. I found that hard work can bring good fortunes so it’s always worth it to put in the time. At long last, I found that doing well at school, I was able to keep and create healthy relationships with people my age. I made friends and was no longer the lonely kid in the corner. I had people I could act the way I wanted to be. The realization that all my three worlds are interconnected is no surprise. I mean, they all came from the same place that I came from. From the violent towns of El Salvador. From my past. But enough about the past. My high school life is coming to an end. This upcoming Saturday, I graduate and life will again be changing. I will no longer have to live in that white blue house. I will have to say goodbye to Arrowhead. I will have to make new friends. College is coming and while I am completely excited for it, I do feel sorrow for leaving them. But it’s not really leaving them because nothing is forever. Unlike like my college memoir class, this is not the end. This is just the start of a new phase in my…

Seeing the magical world of Harry Potter light up the silver screen again. Standing in the same room as the Pop Punk band All Time Low. Cracking open the pages of the Norse Gods in Rick Riordan’s Magnus Chase and The Gods of Asgard: The Hammer of Thor. Studying in my dorm room away from home. Why on earth would anyone want to miss out on these things? You see, I struggled with the question what makes life worth living for a long time, I knew that I was pushing on for something, but I could never find the words. I found my answer slowly, adding things that I was living for to the list until I realized that life was worth living for the small things, for the things in the future that you will miss out on if you leave early.…

A great man named Henry Ford once remarked, “Obstacles are those frightening things you see once you take your eyes off your goals.” This is a quote that is continuously pushing me as I see life through different people's eyes. I can read someone's emotions and see what they’re seeing just by a simple glance at them. I’ve been lost many times before, not knowing what I will make of my life, but just the other day, I realized that I have so much time ahead of me and I need to make the best use of it.…

Through his hard work my father has shown me that nothing in this is impossible in this life. Since he was a child the conditions in which he lived forced him to work to bring food to the table. He worked in the fields collecting corn and planting seeds along with most of his brothers. He never had a chance of going to school or getting a formal education, something he dreamed of doing. Even to this day I see with my own eyes how everyday my father comes home exhausted from working in construction, tired of working under the burning sun. However, every day he raises from his bed at six in the morning to head to the same work that tears him apart everyday with the sole purpose of providing an education for my brothers and me. His continuous struggle has motivated me to continue even in the hardest days, to stay up late finishing homework, to get up in the morning and head to school. To work hard and give my best to each single thing I do. With the sole purpose of making my father proud, to show him that all his endless days of hard work was worth it. To demonstrate to him that it is possible for us to get an education, something he never had the opportunity to do.…

My participation in Student Government has taught me important leadership skills I will be able to carry with me throughout, not only my college career, but my nursing career. Sports has taught me that hard work, discipline, and teamwork will not only defeat any obstacle that comes my way, but with the help and encouragement of others, we can come together as one and get the job done. My extracurricular activities have taught me that with the aid of others anything is possible. Through my community service volunteering at a local housing company for the mentally disabled, I have seen first-hand what the impact one person can make on another’s life. Helping and mentoring the mentally disabled who can’t do some tasks on their own has touched my heart and changed the way I appreciate life in many different aspects. It just reminds me of how fortunate I am to be able to help other, despite the time it takes to do so. The overall time I have sacrificed to do these extracurricular activities inside and outside of school has all been well worth it. Overall, the life lessons I have learned and the change in character I have gained from these activities are gifts I will be able to carry with me in able to achieve my goal.…
