Personal Statement: A Career As A Midwife

My desire to pursue my career as a Midwife has grown as it is something that’s always drew my attention. I feel that this career would be rewarding and will open a gateway of opportunities for my future. I am a confident student who possesses good team work and excellent communication skills. It is unusual in this day and age to have 6 siblings, but this is my background. I have therefore come into contact with Midwives and other professionals that work together as a multi-agency team. My fascination with pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period started when I witnessed my mum giving birth when I was 9 years old, since this experience it has passionately made me want to pursue my career in Midwifery. I want to offer individualised care for childbearing women and maintain a good relationship, ensuring I’m responsive, respectable and accepting. I’m intrigued in gaining knowledge about how to support women through problems in pregnancy, and being taught how to carry out emergency deliveries.
To gain further care experience, I work part time at the weekend as a domiciliary care worker, supporting service users in their own home, encouraging independence. I feel this experience has taught me the importance of meeting each service user’s individual needs, and that each individual is treated in the way they would like, ensuring choices are given.
The role of Midwifery isn’t always a positive experience and by me having a strong mind set I believe I’d be able to deal with the emotion that the job would require. I am willing to take this challenge on and to take advantage of these opportunities and changes and use them to aim higher in my career. I am currently studying at university, understanding the importance of working together as a multi-agency team and how things can go wrong when communication isn’t used
