Personal Statement: A Career As A Nurse

As cliché as it may sound, I consider graduating college one of my greatest personal achievements. Before I even began sending out college applications I decided that I was going to pursue a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. What makes this choice unique is that from the beginning I knew that I had no desire to pursue a career in nursing. My goal has always been to work on the business side of the hospital, but I chose this degree solely to gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by those on the clinical side of the hospital. Despite the underlying knowledge that I had no intention of becoming a nurse, I pushed myself every day to learn as much as I could about this field. Out of over 700 students who chose “Nursing” as their
major freshman year, I was one of 108 students who actually made the cut to upper division at my school. I continued to work hard, and eventually graduated with honors. Nursing has always been a means to an end for me. Instead of choosing an easier degree, I pushed myself to pursue a degree in nursing because I believe that understanding the clinical side of hospital will make me a stronger leader when I transition towards the administrative side. Graduating college is an impressive achievement by anyone’s standards. The fact that I have remained consistent in my career goals and chose to pursue a degree simply to grasp an understanding of a different perspective is why I consider graduating college one of my greatest personal achievements.
