Personal Statement: A Career As A School Counselor

Counselors are advocates for the students, parents, school system as a whole and the community surrounding the school. They are mindful, caring, the voice, empathic, patient, aware, multicultural competent, understanding, genuine, determine, a leader, learner and respectful. School counselors are not limited to these characteristics, but these are some of the characteristics I desire to posses as a school counselor. As a school counselor, I will refrain from disclosing advice, but teach different skills and technique to the students, resulting in the students learning to self-counsel themselves. Being mindful is a crucial part of a school counselor’s job. I plan to continue to practice mindfulness with my students and faculty members. Learning to control my feeling and interpreting of non-verbal messages will increase my mindfulness. Also, I am required to be mindful of personal needs to avoid becoming a burned out counselor. Burnout can cause a counselor regretting the school counseling profession. Regretting being a school counselor is a feeling I refuse experience.
As a bridge, I would focus on the student’s needs and how the school can support their needs. At the same time, I would focus on the school needs and how the students can work together with the school to produce a greater academic and safe environment. The bridge continues to encourage communication amongst teachers, students, staffs and families. In addition to being a bridge, school counselors are chameleons. A chameleon is able to camouflage to their environment. Part of my duty is to represent all cultures in the school and teach the school to respect all cultures.
