Through learning biology I have learnt a great deal about why and how the human body develops diseases, as well as how it tries to defend them. Biochemistry has been an importance to me, and my understanding of it has been reinforced by studying a level chemistry. I have always enjoyed studying Chemistry at school, and look forward to being able to apply my knowledge that I have acquired so far in these subjects to further gain an in depth understanding of science.
To advance my understanding of Optometry, both as a field of study and a career, I carried out a work experience placement at Specsavers. Throughout the placement I shadowed different opticians as they carried out a range of services, such as contact lens fittings and eye tests. I learnt that in optometry communication skills are vital. Without them, it would be more challenging to guide customers and patients through what can often be difficult procedures. Possibly even more important, it is necessary for Opticians to act with empathy with patience in cases where they are experiencing vision difficulties or feel anxious by the outlook of undergoing tests. Throughout my placement I had the opportunity to spend time in the labs, where I witnessed – and occasionally participated in – the procedures that go into preparing lenses and frames. The involvement in this experience gave me a greater appriciation of the technical skills used in preparing and making glasses, as well as a better understanding of the different types of lenses that are
