There has been a controversial and long standing debate about one subject for decades.
Are school sports good for kids? The average parent would probably say yes, as they believe it promotes sportsmanship and confidence. Unfortunately, they don’t know what really happens behind the scenes at school. Sports players often have trouble cramming in sports and academics, resulting in lower grades. Moreover, school sports requires funding, often thousands of dollars that could be used on education. Ultimately, there is no point in playing school sports if the bad outweighs the good?

The after-school time needed for studying and homework are used up by sports. A very small minority of students may be able to cram in sports and academics. Some sports players, in a desperate attempt to hold on to their grades, sign up for “easy-A” electives, which further curbs their academic work-ethic. Athletes leave for their events in the morning or afternoon, and come home late at night. Most of these athletes forget about their homework. Sports have a negative effect on athletes’ grades, which will only make their life at school even more difficult.
Of course, sports equipment, coaches, and transportation all cost money. According to MVRHS student Hank Hill, their school spent $26,000 on costs for a ice arena. While this is a more extreme example, it shows that schools do spend thousands on sports. A fully dressed football player costs over $300, and there are eleven players. All of this money could be used on underfunded classes, which include the arts. The school’s imbalance of funding between sports and academics can be detrimental to the majority of students who just want to
