Persuasive Speech
Specific purpose: to persuade the audience that secondhand smoke is harmful. Claim: Smoking should be banned from all public locations such as schools and hospitals, because of its danger to others. Do you know someone who smokes or do you smoke? Have you ever smoked in front of another person before or even worse a child? My interest in secondhand smoke arose when i was younger and my dad smoked. I was about 8 or 9 years old, however I lost interest until last semester when I researched a paper for English and discovered that secondhand smoke can be very deadly. Secondhand smoke is also known as environmental tobacco smoke. SHS “contains 250 toxic chemicals, including more than 50 that can cause cancer” (CDC). These chemicals include “arsenic, benzene, nickel, vinyl chloride (substance used on plastics)” (NCI). Health effects also arise from secondhand smoke. For children who are exposed it puts them at greater risk for such things as, Sudden infant death syndrome, asthma, middle ear infections and residuary problems. I walk around campus a lot and I see signs everywhere saying no smoking 500ft form doorways, but people still do it and as a student walking by and inhaling the smoke everyday is not good. I feel like the schools and other public settings where others are involved should put a ban on smoking. I believe that for a smoker the choice is theirs and I shouldn’t have to suffer with them by just merely walking by. Secondhand smoke is clearly a threat to both non smoking adults and children, so I hope we can take more actions to protect them. I also hope this speech will make smokers more aware of their surroundings and who they will be

Many people debate over where government intervention is appropriate and personal freedom should begin. One of these highly discussed topics is banning smoking in public places. The ban of smoking in public has many advantages and reasons. Smoking in public puts innocent adults, teenagers, and children at risk of serious health problems. If smoking is banned in public, this may help lower rates of potential smokers and current smokers as well. The welfare of the nonsmoker and the smoker are both affected by allowing smoking in public. By banning smoking in these areas, the population would be positively influenced.…

The American Academy Pediatrics (AAP) has conducted research on the effects of thirdhand smoke and found that it is also harmful. Thirdhand smoke is the smoke left behind—the harmful toxins that remain in places where people have smoked previously. Thirdhand smoke can be found in the walls of a bar, upholstery on the seats of a car, or even a child's hair after a caregiver smokes near the child.…

Smoking cigarettes can cause lung problems. Both first-hand and second-hand smokers are affected by cigarette smoke. Scientific findings and researches show that the chemicals in cigarettes, apart from the smoke, can lead to health problems such as lung cancer. Smoking cigarettes should be banned in public places. In public places, more people, both young and old, can be exposed to the smoke from cigarettes. My position differs from those who might say that smoking altogether should not be banned. My position is that smoking in public places should be banned. It does not include smoking in private places like homes. Smoking in public places should be banned because it poses health risks to individuals who are non-smokers and who do not want to inhale the fumes from cigarettes. The risks are double to those who already have lung ailments.…

Credibility: I first started noticing no smoking in public restrictions on public doorways and hospitals. This made total sense to me, no non-smoker should have to walk through a cloud of cigarette smoke to get into or out of a building. When I heard that a smoking ban was being instituted campus wide I firmly believed this was overkill, unfair and something needed to be done about it. 4. Preview: I will show that adults have the right to make their own choices, even choices they know are bad for them and as long as they don’t endanger anyone else smokers should be allowed to smoke in outdoor, public places with certain safeguards put in place.…

Smoking should be banned in all public places to protect people from second-hand smoke and stop promoting the visual to minors. The cigarette is a small but deadly habit enjoyed by 45.3 million Americans. Smoking is illegal inside most public restaurants and buildings as well as on school property. But, why should cigarette smoking be banned in all public spaces, including outside public establishments? The most obvious reason is second-hand smoke and the damage it causes to others who don 't want to be exposed to cigarette smoke. A ban on all public smoking would improve the air quality in each town, spare people from smoke exposure, decrease the overall amount of smoking, and make it less visible to children and teens as an accepted norm. The negative effects of second-hand smoke are scientifically documented and provide a valid reason for banning all public smoking.…

Most of us have heard somewhere that second hand smoking is not very good for your health. But have we stopped to consider why it is bad, and specifically how it can affect children 's health? They are a vulnerable population because of the potential tobacco smoke has to damage a child 's developing organs, such as the lungs and brain ("www.etnet.org," 2010). The children of smoking parents cannot escape these harmful fumes. The exposure is a preventable cause of illness. Therefore, it is my belief that being informed and educating patients regarding the consequences of exposing anyone, especially children, is a small step in order to prevent childhood illnesses and lower spending.…

The loss of my grandmother was the saddest day of my life. My grandmother never smoked a cigarette in her life. She died of heart disease in 1997. Ironically the heart disease was diagnosed as a result of secondhand smoke. My grandparents were married for over fifty years. Even now I still can hear my grandmother saying “Robert you need to put those cigarettes down before they kill you.” Robert, my grandfather, was a smoker for sixty years. My grandfather would answer back “Well we have to die from something.” After my grandmother died, my grandfather lived another twelve years and he died of a heart attack. Every smoker understands that smoking is harmful to their health. Do nonsmokers know the hazardous of secondhand smoke? The loss of my grandmother elevated my interest in the effects of secondhand smoke; which have become an epidemic in the United States. A study from the surgeon general says 126 million nonsmoking Americans are exposed to secondhand smoke each year (Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, 2006, para 2). More than 49,000 nonsmokers die each year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008, para 3).…

Smoking is one of the most dangerous issues that people are rarely aware of. It causes a lot of diseases and deaths for both smokers and non-smokers. Smoking related-diseases kill one in ten adults globally, or cause four million deaths yearly. Those illnesses wouldn't have spread out to the society if they kept their smoke away from people and where they always are (public places). Hence, smoking in public places should be completely banned to overcome its negative effect on health.…

For many years, tobacco companies advertised that is was cool to smoke; but the results of tobacco use are not so cool. As smoking does more than make your clothes stink, it causes internal damage to the inside of the body. Sometimes, the damage is irreversible. As it is a decision of a smoker to smoke wherever he or she pleases, consideration of others’ health should be taken into consideration. While there are no laws against smoking in general, the government should have regulations against smoking in public.…

People should not be allowed to smoke where there are children, for example, such as parks, family restaurants, hospitals, schools, etc. Because children often copy what they see adults do, they believe doing everything like adults will make them appear mature. Even though most adults smoke believing there alleviating stress or its helping them to lose weight, but children don’t know what adults are thinking while smoking and children will start to copy the adults to express their emotions. Smoking is a bad influence for our children, so I hope that all adults stop smoking in…
