What Surface in OLV has the most Germs?

Introduction I have tested several surfaces in Our Lady of Victory to see which surface has the most germs. I tested ten surfaces and let the petri dishes grow for five days. Over the five days I counted the spores each day and took pictures every other day. It is amazing how things can look and feel clean but they are actually filthy. It is also crazy how many surfaces we touch every day and how one thing we touch can make us sick. Overall, I learned many things about growing bacteria.

Hypothesis
I think the computer lab keyboard will have the most germs. I think that because it is the hardest to clean and many kids touch it.

The toilet handle had the biggest spores and took up the most space in the petri dish. The main door handle did not have any spores at all.

Analysis
This experiment relates to a real world problem because we touch these surfaces every day. I never realized how dirty these surfaces were when I was touching them. This experiment could help us because it can help prevent illnesses and infections before they

2 agar plates divided into 4 equal sections were used for this experiment. Each section was labeled with a number from 1-8. 8 Sterile swabs were used, 1 for each surface swab. 8 surfaces in my home were then identified that could serve as a fomite and swabbed with a sterile swab that was dipped in distilled water to moisten it. Surface #1 was the garbage disposal in the kitchen sink. It was swabbed and the microbes transferred to the appropriately labeled section marked #1 of the agar plate. Surface #2 was the inside of the toilet lid. It was swabbed and the microbes transferred to the appropriately labeled section marked #2 of the agar plate. Surface #3 was my fiancé’s toothbrush. Microbes, despite being the most abundant organisms on Earth, were relatively inconspicuous to humans until the 17th century. These life forms have evolved their mechanisms of growth and survival in order to face the harsh conditions of the planet. While it often seems like two types of microbes, viruses and bacteria, have only impacted human life by increasing the fatality rate, Dorothy H. Crawford’s book, Deadly Companions, refutes this claim. Crawford argues that there are more important effects involved with microbial presence, as they have thrived during specific stages of human cultural history and have had a major impact on previous generations that have become lasting developments. More specifically, microbes have forced humans, the…

There are many ways that the spinner is harmful, but one of the most detrimental ones would be swallowing the small wheel shaped piece in the spinner. Furthermore, this could cause kids to start gasping for air while they are choking. Not only are they a choking hazard, but they could lead to chipped teeth if a child bites into one. Also if kids get hit with one they could receive a minor, but still painful, injury. These injuries could consist of a bloody nose, a bruise, or a small cut.…

We live in a world full of bacteria, in fact, bacteria is all around us. They are tiny, one celled creatures that get nutrients from their environments in order to live. In some cases that environment is a human body. But not all bacteria are bad. Some bacteria are good for our bodies; they help keep belongings in balance. Good bacteria live in our intestines and help us use the nutrients in the food we eat and make waste from what is left over. We could not make the most of a healthy meal without these important helpful germs! Scientists in labs produce medicines and vaccines, which also use some bacteria. The novel Good Germs Bad Germs, by Jessica Snyder Sachs, gives an insight look into a future in which antibiotics will be designed and used more wisely, and beyond that, to a day when we may replace antibacterial drugs and cleansers with bacterial ones (each custom-designed for maximum health benefits).…
