Philosophy Reflection
This was my first major introduction into the study of philosophy, and I can honestly say that it has had a major impact on my belief system. Many of my views have been changed and my overall view on life is much different than it was five months ago. To me, the two most interesting works were the Tao and The Mind's I. The Tao describes a really interesting way of life. Of all the philosophies we've read, it is the simplest and most beautiful. Instead of scanning for hidden meanings and analyzing all parts of life, Laozi just tells us to live life. Do no more than you have to do, but do everything you have to do. He tells us not to worry about death and just live life. I honestly think very simple and peaceful way of living can bring us much more happiness than we have now in our current society. However, the only way it can be implemented is if everyone follows the Tao, and that is nearly impossible in our current society. We should honestly try to live simpler lives and see the beauty of everyday things.

The other work that really impacted me was The Mind's I. I'm not sure if it qualifies as a single work, but there were several important themes that really interested me and changed some of my views. The section that really interested me the most was the section describing intelligent machines and animals, and their relationship to humans. I had always considered humans superior to animals due to their intelligence and ability to communicate. I never thought too much about the idea of intelligent animals and even machines and their relationship to humans. An intelligent machine or animal that can communicate definitely would be on the same evolutionary level as humans, and thus there could be no way to justify creating an intelligent robotic servant or helper without harkening back to the ideology that prompted slavery. Also, destruction of this machine or animal would be equivalent to murder. However, I still so no moral objection to creating an intelligent

This article, “The RU-486 Abortion Pill Should Be Available to Women”, was written by Laura Fraser in 2001 for the Greenhaven Press. The issue involved with this article is whether or not the RU-486 abortion pill should be available to women in the U.S.. The conclusion Fraser came up with was yes, the RU-486 abortion pill should be available to women in the U.S., and for plenty of reasons. For example, if mifepristone becomes available, it will remove political and practical barriers so women can get abortions and physicians will not have to perform complete abortions. Also, 54% of all…

Of the topics that I could choose from, I chose to discuss how to reduce poverty in the United States. Poverty in the United States has been something that I have been personally hearing about since I was a child. It has always been a topic during every Presidential debate that I can remember. While growing up, I have always pondered ways of helping others that were less fortunate than myself. This had led me to believe whole-heartedly that the poverty rate can be reduced through several avenues.…

In this week’s reflection I will reflect upon one of my friends that I was talking to. We were talking about how during hunting season neither of us set an alarm because we just wake up early like we are programed to do it and we just know when it’s time to get up. This got me thinking about if this had anything to do with your memory. It raised many questions like how does your body know what time it is, how does your body know when to wake up, and how could you possibly control this so you would never have to use an alarm?…

I chose to focus the majority of my revision on my zine instead of the rationale paper. I saw that there was no point in changing my rationale as it already explained most of the choices I made when I designed my zine. So instead of re-writing the original zine rationale, I just corrected the grammar and punctuation errors. On the other hand, I realized that my zine could be greatly enhanced with bigger pages. As mentioned in my zine rationale, I discussed about incorporating colors, more text and improving the quality of the text. Taking into account these two suggestive improvements, I had to re-illustrate everything that was on my original zine to new and bigger zine pages.…

Having people in your life who will be there when you need them is important so having friends is essential. I claim that having friends is essential because without any we would have limited interaction with people and with no interaction we would be very unhealthy mentally. This may be controversial because you here all of the stories of supposed friends stabbing each other in the back figuratively. This might make most want to say “I will be better off alone” but that is not the case. I will argue that having no friends affects you mentally by showing you the pros/cons of having friends and no friends. I will also share with you the various affects it does have on you mentally, and what it takes to be friends with somebody.…

As a freshman at SUNY Plattsburgh, I would have never imagined my self where I am today. I was nervous about beginning the communication disorders and sciences major because I wasn't sure if it was the right fit for me or if it was something I would be interested in. Coming into college, the only background I had in communication disorders was the experiences I shared with my two younger brothers. They both went through speech therapy because they struggled with articulation. Two of my older cousins also graduated from this program at SUNY Plattsburgh many years ago. They both encouraged me to pursue it as a major and only had positive things to say about it. As a first semester freshman, I took Introduction to Communication Disorders…

The session on the Environmental Ethics challenged me to understand the various issues involved in the Environmental Ethics for any given organizations. There are many aspects of the Environmental Ethics that need to be addressed by organizations like– Deep Ecology, Animal Rights, Conservation (Ethics of conserving depletable resources), Pollution, and others. Organizations may not be sustainable long term if they do not take care of these areas. There is always a tension between whether the environment ethics directly is the responsibility of the corporate world or not. Looking from the business prospective environment ethics is the last thing on the minds of business executives as they all are focused on increasing their profits at whatever cost. In the process achieving their profits they have compromised many of the environment ethics. These compromises go undetected as the consequences can be quite hard to detect and directly link to an organization. I was challenged from this session that we need to take responsibility as an organization that we must not compromise in any way in this regard.…
