phlebotomy
Introduction 2

The career that I am interested in is phlebotomy. I have chosen this career because I

intend to be a nurse. For a career in the nursing field you will have to be certified and capable of

drawing blood from a patient for clinical or medical testing. Phlebotomist are “highly trained

technicians who collect blood and other fluid samples from pediatric and adult patients”

(BLS, 2008, np).

Affordances and Drawbacks

Being trained as a phlebotomist would be an affordance because it “is a vital part of

today's ultra-modern and vast health care industry” (BLS, 2008,np). People use these trained

technicians every day. There for if you are trained and certified, hospitals, doctors, and even

prisons will be looking to hire you. After doing a lot of research I found that a drawback of this

career is that “dissatisfaction is related to the lack of respect from nurses and a limited career

pathway” (Kluger, M.T. , & Bryant, J., 2008 p2). All though it it may not be like that every

where you work. I am sure that it is a very stressful work setting. Surely the stress would be

more significant when you’re in a hospital setting. Also another drawback would be having to

draw blood from a child or infant. Being a mother I never want to hurt a sick child, but if I do

my job well and don't hurt them too much hopefully I can help them get better.

Growth Potential and Income Potential

According to the (California Department of Public Health, 2013, p1) there are three

different types of phlebotomy certification “limited phlebotomy technician, they are authorized

to do skin puncture and blood collection only. Certified phlebotomy technician 1, they are

authorized to do venipuncture and skin punctures, and certified phlebotomy technician 2, they 3 are authorized to do

Cowen and Moorhead (2006) define nursing shortage as states that do not meet greater than 97% of their demand for nurses, and show that in 2005, 33 states were experiencing a nursing shortage and by 2020, 44 states will be experiencing this same shortage. We can ask ourselves daily there is a shortage, but all we have to do is look at the workplace and see why this shortage exists. Nurses are tired. Tired of having to care for more patients with less resources, tired of having to work extra because there are not enough nurses to fill the positions and tired of having to work in atmospheres where it is all about the money, not the patients and their families (Mee & Robinson, 2003). This tired feeling leads to negative attitudes from nurses, which shows as they interact with patients, colleagues, and nursing students.…
