Observation #1
Name of Child: Leah
Age: 3 years 4 months
Area of Development: Physical (Fine/Gross Motor Skills)
Date: Monday, October 3, 2011
Time: 1PM

Context: For my project my will observe my friends child Leah, Leah is three years old and four months. I went to her home to observe her. Leah lives at home with her mom, dad and two older sisters. Her sisters are nine and six years old. When I arrived at the house Leah was sitting on the couch watching Wonder Pets, her favorite show. Only Leah and her mom were home at this time, her sisters were still in school and the dad was at work. I have been to the house many times before and Leah is very comfortable around me. My friend told me that she told Leah that Alexis’s homework is to come and play with her. Leah knows what homework is because of her older sisters. Leah also just started pre-school, she goes twice a week for a few hours in the morning. Her mom told me that she loves school and didn’t even cry the first day. She has already made some friends and enjoys playing with her classmates.

Actual Observation: While watching Wonder Pets Leah was smiling and pointing to the television and repeating certain sentences. She looked at me a few times and waited for me to acknowledge what she was pointing at or said. It was a Halloween episode of Wonder Pets and Ducky was dressed as a Bumble Bee. Leah pointed to the TV and said “Ducky is a Bumble Bee”, “I be a Bumble Bee for Oloween”. I asked if she had her costume and she quickly jumped off the couch and ran to the target bag on the floor and whipped out the costume with a huge smile on her face. She brought the costume over to me and showed me the wings and zipper. I asked her to put the costume back now because we don’t want it to get ruined before Halloween. On her way back to the couch she picks up the iPod touch and sits back on the couch. It amazes me how quickly she opens the iPod and

Jaelee really enjoys having stories read to her. She pays attention to the stories during story time in her classroom. Jaelee’s behavior has changed from my first observation of her. The first day I observed Jaelee she could not sit still and had a hard time focusing and listening to her teachers. Jaelee has never displayed that type of behavior again when I would go to see her. Her teacher Ms. Reta had said if someone is giving Jaelee attention she does not act out, it is only when she does not get attention does she misbehave. This is the reason I have not seen Jaelee misbehave when I am there. When I am not there Ms. Reta has told me that Jaelee still has a hard time doing what she is told, especially during nap time.…

Sky Barragan, daughter of a good friend of mine is the child I observed for this written evaluation. Sky is four years old with a birthday quickly approaching this upcoming July. The observation took place at a local park in Pasadena that Sky frequents quite regularly for play time. We arrived at the park at approximately nine fifty in the morning and left the park at ten thirty. The park is about five acres and located in a quiet neighborhood of Pasadena, CA. It has a playground, basketball courts, handball courts, and plenty of open grass and trees which make for a calm and peaceful setting. The park was fairly empty with a few adults engaging in morning fitness activities, and the playground was empty. The temperature outside was about ninety…

The child also had no response to my voice when asking child some questions. I also noticed that the child paid very little attention to the story as he was messing around with random items he found on the floor around him. I had wrote down all of my points on a note pad for me to assess the situation and make decisions of what to do next with the information I have received. When the child’s parent came to the setting I had explained to them about the observation and some of the…

The observed child is given a pseudonym in order to remain anonymous. She will be addressed as Lizzy in this paper. Lizzy is a 9 years old child who is part of a typical, traditional middle-class family I visited her while she was conversing with her best friend. She has no prior knowledge of me. Some degree of deception is involved in this observation as I lied about what I will observe; I said I will observe her house, not her actions. The deception was a critical effort to keep the results accurate. I feared she will act differently if she knew I was observing her. Afterall, all deception was undone after the observation, and I asked for her asent again. I informed Lizzy’s parents prior to the observation without any deception, and they provided parental consents. Lizzy was the only person deceived during the observation, and Lizzy’s friend and cousin were unaware of my observation. They were not informed since they were not being observed. Moreover, the observation highlights two domains of development: physical and social.…

The assignment is to observe a child ranging in age from two to six years old completing a language arts activity. The child I observed for this assignment is an almost three year old (34 month) neighborhood girl. I will call her Emily. She lives in a house with both her parents; they are a middle class family. Emily is not in preschool yet, she stays home with her mom, but they regularly attend playgroups and music and gym classes where she gets to interact with other children her age. Emily is very outgoing and very talkative. In my opinion, her speech development is advanced for her age, she passes all the developmental language-related milestones for her age group and a few for the next age group as outlined on page 97 of our textbook (Machado, Jeanne M., 2007. Early Childhood Experiences in Language Arts - Early Literacy, 8th Edition). Also, her speech is very clear. Emily loves books and already recognizes all uppercase letters.…
