This report establishes the use of the CSEP-PATH to assess the physiological profile of myself to prescribe hypothetical goals based on my results during the testing period. This paper includes a discussion of a description of each test completed and what it is designed to measure, the reasons for performing these types of evaluations, and the justification of three hypothetical training goals based on my results found in Table 1 with calculations from Appendix A.
Description of Each Test
The body composition of the client is measured by using a combination of the measurement of waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI). This respectively measures the visceral fat in the abdomen, and an approximant measure of body fattiness as it does not distinguish between …show more content…
fat-free mass and fat mass. These tests together can establish whether the client is at risk for a variety of health problems such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP), 2013). Other aspects of fitness are also established. The Grip Strength Test is an indicator of isometric strength in the forearms and is used as an indicator of overall strength. The Push-up Test is a measure of muscular endurance through the arms, chest and shoulders. The sit and reach is used to measure general flexibility by analyzing the hamstring and lower back. Power is measured through the Vertical Jump by analyzing peak leg power. Through the Back Extension Test, the isometric endurance of the trunk extensor muscles is measured. The Unipedal (One-leg) Stance Test is a valid and reliable standard to assess balance. Overall, these tests are important as each represents an aspect that is important to functional ability and daily living (CSEP, 2013). To measure aerobic fitness, the Leger Test and the Modified Canadian Aerobic Fitness Test (mCAFT) can be used. Both tests measures the estimated VO2max of an individual. This is an important indicator of health as it indicates the muscles ability to use oxygen in relation to as the efficiency of the lungs, heart and blood vessels in transporting oxygen to the muscles (CSEP, 2013).
Reasoning
There are multiple reasons for performing these types of evaluations. By completing the tests, an individual has the ability to compare themselves to references values. This may be a useful opportunity to give an individual a realistic view on their personal health, and inspire them to take action by making a change in their life. Another use of these tests is to prescribe exercise for an individual. By seeing where a client falls in the health benefit rating of a certain test, a specific plan of action may be taking for areas in which a client is lacking while creating clear goals for the client to achieve. Lastly, the tests allow for an individual’s process to be monitored. By completing the tests over again on a certain basis, it would provide data to assess whether the current plan is effective in meeting the desired outcome for the client while motivating the client.
Hypothetical Training Goals
Through the data presented in Table 1, three hypothetical training goals can be constructed in relation to the four components of physical fitness.
Flexibility, cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal fitness as well as body composition are all part of physical fitness and were presented in the tests taken. One goal is to improve my flexibility, which can be done through stretching and yoga. Another goal based on the data is to increase my lower back strength. Due to a history of back pain in relation to an injury, focusing on exercises relative to the lower back and core to strengthen would allow for me to experience less pain now and in the future. This is also in relation to flexibility as yoga also helps with lower back pain. Finally, a goal is also to improve my cardiovascular fitness. Due to my nature of work as a referee, it is important to have a high VO2max. Adding more cardio and interval training to my workouts would help improve this. This may also have the effect of bringing my BMI down to normal, so that I have a lower risk of a variety of health problems. By improving these aspects of my health, there will be a general increase in my physical
fitness.
