This documentary by Thomas Balmes was created to immerse viewers in different parts of the world to show how different cultures take care of their babies. The documentary takes viewers to Namibia, Mongolia, Tokyo, and San Francisco so that they can experience the middle of nowhere, as well as organized chaos in the city. The babies that are featured in this film are Ponijao, Baryarjargal, Mari, and Hattie. Ponijao was raised in a small rural village and is shown as soon as the film begins interacting with her siblings in a play-fighting fashion. She was born months earlier in the middle of her Namibian village, with no hospital or Western medicine that the viewer is aware of. The viewer is then taken to the middle of a plains region in Mongolia,
Social development was also very noticeable in all, but very different in how it was expressed. Ponijao was raised in a tribal village, where each member of the tribe helped take care of her. Her interactions were with other kids, other parents, and her mother. This resulted in social development focused on how to interact with others and how one should care for one another. Bary’s social development differed from this because she was raised as a nomad. Her interactions were more animal and immediate family-based. Her social development was based on how to interact with the animals and Mongolian culture. Mari’s development differed because she was raised in a massive city. She was taken on walks through the city and the park, experiencing Tokyo's culture and different types of people. Mari could be the most socially developed among the four because of her immersion into her culture and city at such a young age. Hattie also differs from the rest, but is more similar to Mari than the others. San Francisco is a large city, but she did not experience it in the same way Mari did.
