Practicum Experience
I find my practicum experience to be a real assert to the agency I am with currently, because I can assist others with the knowledge acquired.1 It is also great in providing hands-on learning, which is in stride with the real world.1 This experience is affording me the opportunity to deal with actual issues confronting a population and increasing my commitment to working in the public health environment.

I do feel that the practicum experience has enhanced my technical skills in the field so far. For example, I have been introduced to several personnel at the agency, beside my infectious disease epidemiology team. After I got back from my MPH graduation ceremony, I shared my accomplishment with the department head, and she was very impressed. She said that she will keep me in mind when a position becomes available. Therefore, I would have to agree that this experience is expanding my professional network.

I thought it would be intense and uncomfortable, because I am just a volunteer, per se. However, it is going much better than anticipated, for I am treated like I am a full-time employee with most of the benefits. As a result, I would have to agree that that is a very fair statement about my practicum

Those in the healthcare profession are respected, hardworking individuals who went above and beyond to prove themselves capable of helping others in the greatest way possible. My career goals are very straightforward. I’ve taken several steps in high school to accomplish these goals by being well disciplined in my studies, and participating in a Health Careers Internship Program. This program offers me a variety of opportunities that make me a more applicable in a healthcare setting. I’ve learned how to build a strong résumé and cover letter, and how do professional interviews well. We also get the chance to observe and participate in a medical environment. I’ll be shadowing with Dr. Steve Carr at Northern Star Therapy and learn the basics of physical therapy. I’ve done also done volunteer work in a Geriatric setting, at the St. Benedict nursing home in St. Cloud. My plans following high school are to attend the University of Minnesota in the College of Biological Sciences. My hopes are to complete my undergraduate in there in the Pre-Medicine program, attend graduate school, and specialize in a currently undecided field of…

I continue to engage in medical experiences with my most memorable being, a six-week intense summer program offered by the University of Miami's School of Medicine, which aims to provide a mini medical school experience. We were taught several courses by medical school professors, including Anatomy & Physiology lab where we studied a human cadaver. As well, I shadowed doctors in departments such as Neurology and Trauma, where I observed my first surgery. This experience exposed me to the patience and detail of practicing medicine and interconnectedness…

I was able to learn about the importance of effective medical education and communication with my patients through creating nutrition materials on the different food groups and chronic ailments such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart attacks as well as consulting with patients weekly to find out what they needed and desired to improve their health and how I could direct them to their needs. At Haven, I exchanged ideas with each of my patients on how they and their families can live healthier lives as I learned about their diverse lives and tried to make sense of it for them and others. Haven taught me how to become an effective listener, a fast learner, and an effective deliberator within a healthcare setting and serves as the foundation of those skills in my upcoming medical…

I had the pleasure of shadowing a physical therapist in a home health setting treating children under the age of three. At first what initially looked like playing with the kids turned out to be much harder when I tried emulating what the therapist did. Throughout my senior year and even more now as a graduate, I realize I'm still constantly learning. I desire to continue to observe different settings as well as retake a class in order to prepare myself for school. Beyond shadowing I jumped on an opportunity to work side-by-side therapists. I took a position as a rehab aide at an outpatient clinic and enjoy seeing all I’ve learned so far being applied every day. I have absorbed knowledge of different protocols, handing practices, and front office operations. I relished being a part of the treatment process as well as the everyday tasks involved in running a clinic. It opened my eyes to better see the depth and breadth of the world of physical…

I would like to tell you that my day in the program was unique because it let me explore the program in depth. I am working at the Cleveland clinic as an English-Arabic healthcare interpreter and I feel the warm atmosphere between all the people in the hospital every day. Being in the hospital to facilitate the communication between the patients with limited English proficiency and the physicians made my dream of being a resident at the Cleveland Clinic grow within me. Those bilingual encounters made me familiar with the hospital departments where I had to work as a team with different staff, nurses and lab technicians to make sure that we provide the highest quality of care to the patients. Furthermore, I had a new friend waiting for me in…

I am interested in post-graduate training because I believe it will aid in preparing me to be a good healthcare provider. The education I am currently receiving at Ursuline College is an excellent one but it does not fully prepare me to step into my new role. There is a gap between school and the “real world” that this type of program helps to bridge. I remember the stress and uncertainty I felt as a new nurse for the first year I was in practice-- feelings I am sure all new healthcare professionals encounter when they enter the workforce. While I do not expect post-graduate training to completely alleviate those feelings, I do believe it will provide me learning opportunities and the necessary supportive environment to develop my skills…

Personally, I think I could be more confident someday if I become one of those practitioners who can start a research project for my institution or for the society. Not that I will be a wonder woman who can actually answer (through researching) all the problems my future hospital will have to ask, but knowing within myself that I have a certain way and capability to look for a solution whenever a problem may arise in my institution, makes me feel confident and honored. I can be confident that I could be a part of something small (but helpful) for my society.…

During my time there I really enjoyed talking to, caring for and developing a relationship with the service users. The experience genuinely helped broaden my perspective; it enabled me to focus outside of myself and my own little world and it made me realise I wanted to be in a profession that helps people. At the care home I acquired skills essential for comforting people who may have been restless and I was also able to control stressful situations in a confident and calm manner. To gain further insight into the nursing field I also obtained work experience at Darent Valley Hospital. This invaluable opportunity enabled me to observe the nurses' interactions with patients in the wards and how they cooperated with the doctors. I was presented with the opportunity to shadow a nurse in the chemotherapy department where I was able to see the way she comforted the patients and their families and the way she educated the patients about their next step to better health and…
