Prejudice: Are Americans Free Or Truly Free?

All Americans can be considered free if compared to other countries version of freedom. The constitution grants basic human rights such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, these rights guarantee Americans a chance to choose their own destiny. Freedom is the ability to choose what you want to do when you want to do it. Now when using this definition of freedom are all Americans truly free? No they are not. Prejudice is another problem that not all Americans. Everyday Americans are being discriminated against because of their gender or skin color, while most Americans do not consider themselves to be racist or sexist. This is a prejudice that most people don’t even realize they are holding against someone and it happens everyday in America, despite better qualifications people will still hire the person they feel most comfortable with. These prejudices are what hold this great nation back from true freedom for all. The 14th amendment is supposed to protect against discrimination, yet everyday this right is violated behind closed doors without any consequences. If people are not held accountable for these discriminatory attitudes, no change in the treatment of Americans can be expected. As a teenager one of the main ways I express myself is through my choice of clothing however when I go to school my choice of clothing is suddenly restricted by unreasonable sexist dress codes. As an American citizen my rights are set forth in the constitution. Nowhere in the constitution does it say
