Primary Message Of Erin Brockovich
One film that taught me a lot about the role of women in the United States, was Erin Brockovich, which was directed by Steven Soderbergh. The film took place in California, where a single mom named Erin Brockovich, became a legal assistant in order to make money to support her family. With her new job, Erin stumbled upon some information regarding a California power company who had been polluting a city's water supply. Through Erin's confidence and charm, she worked very hard to take them down. This film spoke powerfully to me because even though people tried to get her to quit, she did not listen. She was so passionate about what she was doing that no one else's opinion mattered. The primary message of this film is that you do not have to be the smartest person in the room to be heard and make a difference. I think this message is important for young women, especially in today's society. This film related to the topics discussed in class because Erin did not let a man get in the way of her blossoming career. Another film that taught me a lot about the role of women in the United States was Working Girl, directed by Mike Nichols. The film took place in New York City, where a receptionist named Tess McGill gave her boss a very good business idea. Unfortunately, Tess later …show more content…
Anita Hill accused her boss, Clarence Thomas for sexually harassment after he showed her several pornagrpahic videos. This was very brave for a woman to do, especially because she was going up against a man with lots of power. Although have many called Anita a liar, I believe she was standing up for herself. Anita did not only do herself a favor, but also many women in the workforce. When Anita came out with her story, several other women did too. Although Anita did not win her case, her story brought attention to the topic of sexual harassment, which was a problem some women were facing every

On Friday October 11th, the hearing of Thomas Clarence commenced. During the hearing the senate members berated Hill with a series of questions about the explicit details of the sexual harassment Hill endured, looking for any misstep to completely dismiss the case. Hill described the hearing as “awful” because she not only had to relive the situation, but Hill was also embarrassed to have to talk about such private things in front of basically the entire country. After Hill had fully testified she pulled her witnesses to support her claims and speak about her behavior during her time at EEOC.…

In her open statement on the sexual harassment hearings, Anita Hill recounts the details of how Judge Clarence Thomas took advantage of working relationship between them and conducted inappropriate sexually offensive behaviors toward her. Although Hill does not feel comfortable to reveal her vulnerability, she keeps a very formal and constraining tone while she illustrates in details of the process in which Judge Thomas intentionally ignored her refusal on his innumerable invitations to social outings. Admitting to having poor judgement, Hill is still trying to portray a despicable and heinous character of Judge Clarence, and proves to the court that his illegitimate action deserves punishment.…

Anita Hill, a lawyer who worked for now Judge Clarence Thomas, US Supreme Court Judge, then just a nominee. Anita Hill came forward with allegations that Thomas had sexually harassed her while they worked together at the Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She is accusing him of harassing her not physically but through comments. According to the article, it appears that Anita Hill is possibly making up lies about her being sexually harassed. Anita Hill could be lying because she said after she first turned him down he just asked why she refused to go out with him. Another thing she said that is hard to believe is after all that she accused him of she took a second job under this same man. One more thing that does not go is that she said she finally went out with him after she found another job; job or no job she should not be going nowhere with a person who has harassed her sexually.…

However, this does not excuse the fact that she was in the position to do something great for the progression of women’s rights, and never did. Her involvement in organizations allowed her to be a leader for the progression of the women’s rights movement. However, it will become apparent that her involvement in organizations was mostly for her own gain and her achievements did not amount to…

In Iron Jawed Angels, I also saw the heartache and hard work that Alice Paul and Lucy Burns had to go through to fight for the rights of women. I watched carefully as these women voiced their opinion so demandingly and courageously that even in the male governed society they overcame their trial and errors. All of these obstacles that they went through were so inspirational because these women have shown us to always fight for what you believe in, even if everyone else is fighting against…

An example of this is when she wanted to help the soldiers in the war by bringing supplies for them, but her request was rejected. She never stopped until she was able to help those soldiers in need. She was a very independent woman and had the courage to fight against people (men) who didn’t believe women could do as good of job as a man. Unfortunately, there is still disparities between men and women, but women can use Clara Barton as an example to fight for equality and have a voice to speak for ourselves. I also think that Clara clearly showed that actions are louder than words because many people say they want to help, but only a person with true passion for the cause can take words and put it into action as Clara Barton…

When she tells the audience her grandmother was born just three years after women won the right to vote and that she herself was born only because Roe v. Wade was not yet decided (para. 2), she reminds readers that women have only recently earned the right to equality and the ability to make choices regarding their own bodies. Several times she suggests that a female president is what all generations of women have dreamed of and it is the next step to “laying dynamite on centuries of white patriarchy” (para. 8). By bringing up feminist ideas such as these, she evokes emotion in the audience and makes it seem as if a woman is the only hope to continue making change. From there she builds on the feeling of American pride and patriotism to give the idea that it would be great not just for women but America in…

Women face many challenges that men did not have to face. In the early days of our country, it was a man’s world. Women served their men. They were not offered the same opportunities that men were. To some extent, this still exists today. Women don’t always receive equal pay for equal work as their male co-workers. That was true in the 1840’s when Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. That shows amounts of moral courage that many of us could never achieve.…
