a) Planning
Planning means setting an organization’s goals and deciding how best to achieve them.
Managers need to plan so that worker’s activities are consistent with the organization’s goal and the correct type and amount of resources can be acquired.
Planning requires information, judgment and decision making.
Through planning the managers takes into account the variables in his environment an so is able to foresee and reduce the risk he faces such as economics, social, political, legal and technologies factors. b) Organizing
Organizing is grouping activities and resources in a logical fashion to achieve its aim.
To be effective, management have to ensure that the activities of various groups are integrated and coordinated so that there is unity of purpose.
Organizing also means creating and organizational structure that is suitable for the achievement of the agreed.
Work has to be allocated, line of authority and responsibility defined and a system of rules an procedures, which guide the conduct of employees laid down.
c) Directing
Management must provide direction a leadership to motivate staff to perform the essential task within the required timeframe and with the most efficient use of resources.
It is the management’s responsibility to create the right level of communication and cooperation where everyone is committed to the common objectives.
d) Controlling
The controlling function involve 3 elements :- * Steps must be taken to set work standards and to communicate them to the staff * A system of measures must be devised to access staff performance according to these work standards * Where there is a variance between actual performance and the acceptable work standards, the
