The province of Quebec announced that it has put the Private Refugee Sponsorship (PSR) program on temporary hold in order to process existing backlogs.
In an interview, Quebec Immigration Minister Kathleen Weil clarified that while the suspension is provisional, the exact date of the program’s resumption is yet to be known. The provincial immigration department’s priority is to process the over 10,000 requests that have accumulated in the past year.
“We have received many sponsorship applications as part of the welcome operation of Syrian refugees, and the sponsorship organizations are aware that the processing times are due to the considerable inventory which has accumulated over the last year,” said Weil is a statement addressed to the press. The PSR is a globally recognized scheme in which the government of Canada allows private institutions to sponsor an individual, a group of people, or a family. Upon approval from the government, the sponsor is expected to provide and emotional support for the sponsorship’s duration, which typically lasts for a year, but can extend up to three years under special circumstances.
