Intercultural communication is inevitable in modern business world, and a successful merchant should have professional communication skill and knowledge to solve problem in oral communication. This essay will discuss how to exactly confirm communication situation, and then utilizing professional skills to deal with the issues of cultural difference and information overload in Fran’s presentation.

Cultural difference and information overload can be common problems in the presentation. The first mistake is she only trial the presentation to her domestic colleague, but she did not take account into the cultural difference whereas her audiences are international colleagues. This is because “Intercultural communication often relates to cultural groups at the level of nations and national languages” (Bowe and Martin 2007, 4). According to “Bowe and Martin (2007, 1) to an understanding of intercultural communication is crucially related to an understanding of the ways in which the spoken word may be interpreted differentially”. That is, misunderstanding or incomprehension will be caused by such as people have different culture background and language barrier. The other problem of Fran is information overload. De janasz, wood and Gottschalk (2006, 3) believe oral communication activities tend to cause participants sense difficult to accept a large amount of information from speaker. Because of information overload may arouse unfocused and boring, thus audience may did not want to participate any of activities she had planed. As a result, to effectively solve these problems in the presentation is the way to achieve successful oral communication.

There are many solutions of cultural difference and information overload. For example, before presentation she not only needs to practice, but also have to clearly know which condition she will be. Then, in order to manage intercultural interaction effectively, speakers need to be aware of the inherent norms of their own speech practices, the methods in which regulations change depending on situational factors and the methods in which speakers have other language backgrounds may have different expectations of language usage and behavior (Bowe and Martin 2007,1-2). For information overload, the quantity of information should be rationally controlled. In oral communication when met a large amount of complex information must be delivered, the major way is concentrate on improving the quality of information (De Janasz, wood and Gottschalk 2006, 4). So, by using these methods Fran may effectively solve these major problems in her presentation, and her international colleagues may be willing to give her some content responses.

This essay discuss about two main issues cultural difference and information overload in oral communication, and it provides some great methods to resolve them. First of all, the problem of Fran was that she did not completely realize culture barrier between she and her international collogues. Secondly, her information may be overmuch and the important information is not screen out during arrangement. Finally, if Fran can fully understand the problem, she will successfully overcome these problems, after that her oral communication skill will be improved, and she also will present a brilliant presentation to her international collogues in the future.
