Pros And Cons Of Animal Slaughtering
Many vegans (including Gary Steiner) feel that buying meat, even humanely treated or free-range meat, is morally wrong. Gary Steiner goes on to say, “Chickens may be labeled free-range even if they’ve never been outside or seen a speck of daylight in their entire lives” (196). In other words, even if meats are labeled free-range, that doesn’t mean they treated humanely. He goes on to say, “Even if it is raised “free range”, it still lives a life of pain and confinement that ends with the butcher’s knife” (196). With this knowledge, we must ask why consumers still buy these items. Steiner believes this is because of the soothing feeling their conscience receives when purchasing these falsely reassuring labels. A simple google search of animal slaughterhouses shows the grim truth of animal production lines. Hit, kicked, and piled on top of each other, the animals are treated like objects. After living the most horrendous life, animals have been known to be improperly slaughtered. Improper slaughtering will cause great pain. Pain that factory workers have become overly accustom to. This is where Steiner gets the feeling that meat eaters just don’t care. Steiner goes on to say, “If they did care, they would learn as much as possible about the ways in which our society systematically abuses animals …” (197). Factory animals are lined up to be one by one heartlessly killed in a cold way, as if they were raw materials. The most social media grow, the more slaughterhouse cruelty is known. Can people, as animals, morally continue to eat meat, wear leather, and go to the circus? Can we honestly say we’d be ok with this treatment inflicted upon our family, friends, or neighbors?     Our gustatory pleasure is not as important as the lives of animals. The example used in the article to explain this argument was the “Torturing Puppies” argument. Anyone who has compassion and emotions would agree that saving the lives of the puppies is the right thing to do, as opposed to killing them just for a momentary, gustatory experience.     Over the last few decades farming animals for food has grown and evolved into a highly efficient, streamlined industry known as factory farming. Factory farms are owned and operated by big corporations, and despite the fact they make up only a small percentage of farms in the United States, they are responsible for most of the meat and eggs we consume here (Sierra Club, 2005). In factory farming, baby piglets are castrated without anesthesia and thrown into a pen, where they huddle in a corner writhing in pain. Egg laying chickens are crammed four or five to a cage (45x50cm) for their entire lives. They cannot spread their wings or stretch out in any way, and they never see daylight. To prevent them from pecking at one another, their beaks are brutally burnt or sliced to a stub. To produce veal, newborn calves are confined in small crates and restrained to allow a minimum of movement until they are slaughtered at just five months old. Factory farmed animals are treated like non-living commodities, suffering horrendous cruelties to produce the maximum profit at the least amount of cost. In recent years public awareness about factory farming conditions has grown, and so have concerns over animal cruelty and public health. The general public should not tolerate animal cruelty in the factory farming industry because it is extremely inhumane to animals and it represents a growing health hazard for human beings; instead, consumers should put pressure on the industry to change the way animals are treated and to ensure farms do not pose a threat to public health.…

    The industrialization of our meat and food industry has obliterated the notion of Old McDonald’s farm and replaced it with scenes that are deplorable by any morally just person’s standards. These large animal farms, that I have personal experience with (Oakdale Egg farms in Pasco Washington) produce an estimated 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. That share is larger than that produced by transportation. That statistic should be coupled with the fact that for every six pounds of grain fed to livestock and poultry, we receive in return, one pound of food (Singer). Part of the reason why I get pissed off every time I see a new shiny, One Cent Penny, is because I am aware that the cost of making the damned thing is more than it is worth. If the fact that we are so wasteful in a practice that is so morally flawed in standard industry practices, we should be appalled at the fare on our tables? The ethics of our waste and maltreatment of animals is as acratic of practice as I can think of in today’s world, with as little pushback seen from the general masses. Singer states, “If we do not change our dietary habits, how can we censure those slaveholders who would not change their way of living?” Changing our diet is tough no doubt. Envisioning a life without meat is very difficult for me but in my household, a concerted effort is made to purchase free range, organic and humanely treated animal products. Where Singer see’s no need for meat in a diet that can be supplemented with non-animal products for nutrition, I feel that the separation created is too much too soon for most Americans and other industrialized nations.
