Patriotism is shown in many ways, from putting your hand over your heart and singing the National Anthem to not standing for the National Anthem as a way of boycotting. It also means not getting backlash when you decide to boycott things such as the National Anthem like Kaepernick did, when he had a perfectly valid reason to do what he did. Being American means being able to post videos of yourself tearing or burning Kaepernick’s jersey because you think that what he did was betrayal to our country or wrong in some way. I will stand up and challenge authorities when they are in the wrong as a sign of patriotism. It is patriotism because I am exercising my first amendment rights for the better of this country and its people. No one acts the same or grew up the same, so it’s a no brainer when it’s observed that they all have contrasting opinions. And with different opinions come divergent reactions of anger or spitefulness when their opinion is not met. An extensive controversial topic today is how much we sensitize our books and museums for the children and everyone else. A writer from The Atlantic Monthly wrote about this exact issue 100 years ago and had a sprinkle of intriguing arguments for it.…

What is an American? Before 1776 America was not a free country. The British government had controlled America. But on July 4th, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed, which states that the thirteen American colonies were independent and was no longer controlled by the British. In this day and age, to be American is something frequently mocked. With all the stereotypes, it makes us wonder what it truly means to be American. Does it mean to be fat and unhealthy? Greedy and demanding? Racist and Harsh? This is the brand we are all marked with as a whole nation, but I reject these labels. To be an American is something we should be proud of. By the definition I see, it is something to be proud of, even in the darkest and harshest of times when we do things we will never forgive; these are just mistakes that many make, and it shouldn't deter us from taking pride in morals this country holds.…
