At yesterday’s town council meeting (3/6/17), the serious problems of Cottone Field took center stage. Concerned residents and students lined up to inform the council about the worn-out condition of the field which has recently caused injuries to several students. The injuries were due to the uplift of the base layer of silica sand which purpose is to act as a cushion. Without this base layer of sand, the field becomes incredible dense, providing little to no dampening of impacts. The result of this is that students are getting sprained ankles in situations where they would normally be uninjured. One concerned resident reported “their was no difference in feel between the concrete and the field once I stepped on to it”. Another reported…

Apple is continuously creating newer and better versions of the iPhone because they bring in a lot of money. Newer is better. Humans are creating artificial everything. One example of this is artificial turf fields. They are becoming increasingly common in soccer and American football, as well as other sports. There are many benefits to synthetic turf, like the fact that turf is consistent, even playing surface in rain or shine, whereas natural grass would get ripped up when wet. According to the Olympic Movement, knowledge of the planet’s fragile eco-systems and understanding of its humanity’s impact on Earth have greatly improved over the last decade. Climate change awareness has become an issue and at the same time the IOC (International Olympic Committee) has taken advantage of this global awareness to review how the sporting world has embraced the challenges set out in the Agenda 21 and commit to its implementation of measures that will bring the sustainability issue to achievement (Hawkes,2012). The London Olympic Organizing Committee embraced the “One Planet Living” concept in its successful bid for the games and this was also implemented in the planning and operations of the events. In this plan, making partnerships with world organizations like WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and Bio-Regional were considered basing on the principle that people should live within the world’s resources (Rogues, 2007). With support from such organizations, London Olympic Organizing Committee put forward to show that Olympics could be organized with a sustainable theme. In order to achieve this, a sustainability plan was developed which contained five aspects that were to be embraced which were; climate change, waste, bio-diversity,…

By now a majority of the American population is aware of the changing climate and its negative global indications including the rising sea level and the depletion of the ozone layer. The direct national implications, however, tend to be overlooked, the most significant being the depletion of our available fresh water supply. The rate of decline, however, is accelerated by current agricultural practices, especially large-scale commercial production. Modern agriculture systems require large quantities of the supply to aid fertilizer distribution as well as support plant growth. A considerable portion, however, is wasted due to soil saturation limits. The useless, polluted, water poses potential health threats as it becomes surface runoff, or assimilates into the groundwater, eventually infiltrating the public water supply. As technology continues to advance, however, traditional soil is no longer the sole medium needed for plant growth. Indoor growing methods, like aeroponics, eliminate the use of harmful additives (pesticides), and conserve water by directly employing nutrient solution to the roots. By developing urban growing facilities, the use of aeroponics can create a more sustainable water supply, promote the restoration of natural ecosystems, and potentially reverse global warming.…
