Jonathon made it well known through the frustration in his voice and the clenching of his teeth that he was upset to be in the hospital. He felt that he did not have any mental health disorders or substance abuse problems, though his chart and assessment stated otherwise. The patient also vocalized his anger with his parents through vulgar language and loud, rambling thoughts. He blamed his parents for putting him in the hospital, stealing his independence and “locking him up”. Due to the fact that Jonathan did not agree with his diagnosis of bipolar type 1 disorder, he did not think that he needed medication. Jonathan suffered with hallucination and delusions, which I experienced during our interaction, as well as manic behaviors and aggressive. These are all common symptoms of bipolar type 1 disorder. His records showed that he has been diagnosed with this mental disorder for 6 years and has been stable on medication until a year ago when he stopped taking his medication. It was frustrating to see Jonathan displaying these symptoms and struggling to complete activities of daily when medication has been so beneficial to life in the past.
