Puff The Magic Dragon
For fifty-four years, I, Puff The Magic Dragon, have been curled up in my cave. The emptiness on my gigantic tail representative of the bare wasteland that is my heart. The only thing keeping me from unleashing wrath upon the world was the autumn mist of Honnah Lee, but like everything else, it has disappeared. My life used to be glorious. Kings, Queens, Noblemen, they would all bow down whenever they passed by. They would stay and chat and eat and laugh. Pirates would lower their sails at the sight of me sailing the seas (wings were overrated), and I was able to roar my name with such dominance and control that when I did, everyone from sea to shining sea knew. There were great riches, gold, toys, glory, and through it all, Little Jackie Paper perched by my side atop my gigantic tail, wearing a chain of silver with value equivalent to the likes of our glory. ‘Twas one grey night when they turned on him. Ambushed him in his slumber in my cave by the sea. For what reason, I do not know. What I do know is that I could’ve protected him. I could’ve done something. I could have saved my best friend’s life. If I weren’t such a coward, I could’ve saved him. Dragon’s may live forever, but the day that Little Jackie Paper died was the day I …show more content…
It is here that I meet face to face, for the first time in fifty-four years, a king. What a fake man, rich beyond compare, just sitting around while his citizens scrabble for the essentials of life, food, water, shelter. The citizens clearly in the state these measly humans describe as “poverty”. I gave this first kingdom a chance to live, I asked the king, “Divide your fat riches among your population so that they might live. Surely a king wants what’s best for his people?”. I burned that excuse for a kingdom, its fat leader, and it’s population. “How the world has changed”, I thought to myself as I swooped away from the burning ashes of the now barren

And here comes this huge winged beast, who breathes fire from its mouth; bringing the half of the kingdom down to ashes. A dragon has come to challenge our might of our hero. And as per the norm, despite his old age, our King accepts. He puts on his sword and armor once more, and combats the beast. Our king struggled for the beast had the upper hand. But we all know that a dragon is no match for the mighty Beowulf. Our king slits the dragon’s left wing holding its flight to lower grounds. Once our hero successfully placed himself into position, he cuts through the dragon’s skin and reaches for its heart. The dragon wriggled and fought but he was overpowered by our mighty Beowulf. He grabs a hold of the dragon’s heart and rips it from its body. The dragon completely falls down to the ground, dead, but leaving our hero poisoned to death. And here we are, mourning. But is that what our king would really want? I believe that if he were to attend his own burial, he would not want us to mourn, but to rejoice instead. For he died…

Royalty is a term we like to associate with elegance, sophistication, and luxury. They’re the envy of all as they seem to live an extravagant lifestyle filled with exotic trips, an unlimited supply of money, and a stress-free life. But what is often overlooked, is the overwhelming responsibility they have to be the face of a country. Sir George Savile, a member of England’s King Charles II’s Privy Council, attempts to persuade his audience to think of King Charles II as a beloved individual who has suffered greatly, but refused to show it for the sake of his people. Savile succeeds in this by using metaphors, imagery, and allusion.…

The Opium War did affect China’s economy. From Source B, I can infer that the Opium Wars made China richer. The source mentioned that the export of tea from China increased 42,000,000kg in 1855 from only 7,500,000kg in 1843, an increase of more than 500%. This showed that the trade increased. With more trade, there would be more money which were gained from the trades. Furthermore, more trade also means more jobs for the Chinese. Therefore, the Chinese will be able to earn more money and they can afford more items to live a better life. So, the Opium wars did affect the China’s economy. From what I have learnt, the treaty which China signed from the Opium Wars forced China to open up five ports to foreign trade (canton, shanghai, Foochow, Ningpo and Amoy). With more ports opened up,…

Their contemporaries described them as “Robbers, Opposers, and Violators of all Laws, Humane and Divine.” Many viewed themselves as a more selfish reincarnation of Robin Hood, stealing from wealthy merchants, foreign traders, and abusive captains, and in doing so, threatening the hierarchical status quo of sixteenth and seventeenth English society by declaring “war against the world.” The Law considered them hostes humani generis, enemies of all mankind. In reality, pirates of the Golden Age, a period loosely covering the years 1660-1730, were none of those things, or perhaps more accurately, were not one but a combination. They were all robbers, since piracy in its most elementary definition is nothing more than a robbery at sea, something…

The Deer Ladies Leaves twirled around me as I stood in the middle of this lonely, yet enchanting forest. A small flutter fills the air as hundreds of leaves float down from the treetops, then the silence returns as the leaves touch the surface of a nearby pool. A faint song rang through the trees, accompanied by the occasional cry of a raven. If only every day could be like this. silent and peaceful, yet hear the storm brewing.…

Before I begin my exposition, I want to take a moment to quote the wise King Solomon’s book of Ecclesiastes, whereupon he has written, “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” Indeed, everything that man sought throughout history has been but one vain attempt after another to satisfy our lust, our wish to conquer and own everything. This fool’s wish hath bent man into a crooked being, to the point of forcefully enlisting the aid of unwilling others to achieve this impossible goal. One of those among the unwilling was in life my grandfather.…

“It is a tragic mix-up when the United States spends $500,000 for every enemy soldier killed, and only $53 annually on the victims of poverty”, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This fact indicates how poverty is an issue that needs more attention because of it’s significant impact on the people in the world. Peter Singer, an Australian humanist and philosopher, addresses the dilemma of poverty world-wide in his essay, The Singer Solution to Poverty. Singer argues how it is wrong for an individual to live well without giving substantial amounts of money to help people who are hungry, malnourished, and dying from easily treatable illnesses. In the matter of defending and qualifying Singer’s argument, people should be more aware of the issue of poverty.…

In this essay I intend to explain what Dr. Parenti’s position on wealth versus want in the United States, how those two ideas work with each other and against each other to undermine the three fundamental principles of democracy. Wealth as defined by Dr. Parenti can be found in the opening pages of chapter four when he goes into detail about the class system that exists in the United States. The United States has been touted as a nation of middle class citizens, Dr. Parenti argues that this hasn’t been the case in many decades and will only get worse as time goes one. Rather than have an upper, middle and lower class system, we have an owning class, employee class and finally the serfs or laborers.…
