Purpose Of The Henry County Jail
There are 3,200 local and county jails in the United States. In fifty states and over three thousand counties, only one of these is in Henry County. This is the Henry County Jail, run by professional men and women that contribute to its effectiveness today. In 1979, the facility was first opened and functioned as the county jail until 1991. It was later reopened in 2003 and referred to as the Jail Annex. It is now a main part of the Henry County Jail.
Typically, The Henry County Jail functions as a pre-trial detention center. Those who cannot bail out or are still awaiting their sentencing are placed here until their trial date. This is the main purpose of the jail, however, it also houses inmates who are sentenced to serve up to twelve months.

The Sheriff’s administration overall runs the prison. This administration includes the Sheriff Keith McBrayer, the Chief Deputy David Foster, and an administrative group. In most jails, the Sheriff or local government is in charge. This one in Henry County validates that, as the sheriff is at the head of the prison administration.
While there are no privatized jails in Henry County, there is something known as a Jail Annex. The facility was first opened in 1979 and was known as the county jail. It was practically the original Henry County Jail. It functioned in all the same ways. It closed down in 1991 but later reopened in 2003 with the name Jail Annex which is now a major part of the jail. Today, it is a minimum security housing facility that only holds up to 84 people.
Although Jails are not seen as the most desirable places to be, they can be very beneficial to its inmates as well as the community. For example, the main purpose of a jail is to separate citizens from dangerous people. By doing so they are ensuring our safety. It makes us feel safe and secure knowing those who could and would harm us are locked away. Jail can also be helpful and rehabilitating for those incarcerated. There are many options for those in jail. Inmates can begin or continue working towards education, getting a job, and finding a place to live once they are

On October 8th we visited Fresno County Jail. Fresno County Jail is ran by the Fresno County Sheriffs Office. According to the visitation there is not one specific watch commander, there are several different individuals that are watch commander which is dependent on the shift. The head of the agency or director is Sheriff Margaret Mims. The inmates at this particular institution are supervised by approximately 350 individuals ranging from correctional officers, sergeants, and lieutenants. As defined by Fresno county it is the Correctional Sergeants duty to act as a lead supervisor for one or more functional work areas. Correctional Sergeants then report to Correctional Lieutenants who serve as a watch commander for an assigned work shift. Correctional Lieutenants are also the first management level classification within the correctional officer classification series. This particular jail is used to detain individuals awaiting court appearance, and to house convicted inmates sentenced to serve terms in the local jail. As I am writing this paper the current population is 2,639 where only 231 of those are female inmates. There are currently 959 sentenced inmates in the jail, and 1680 are considered to be “pretrial”.…

Wabash and Miami County Jails are two completely different settings. Simply because Miami jail is much larger and cleaner than Wabash’s jail. In fact, I learned that Miami’s jail is 30 years newer than Wabash’s, which significantly makes a huge difference between the two. Holding 240 inmates, Miami holds almost three and half times more than what Wabash’s jail holds. This often times leads to Wabash’s jail paying money to Miami to hold inmates because it is not large enough.…

Jails are different in many ways, but when it comes to comparing the Miami County Jail to the Wabash County Jail, it looks like the Taj Mahal compared to a motor home. The two jails obtain very different security measures. In addition to the Miami County Jail it's more hands off rather than the Wabash County Jail where it’s more hands on. The recreation areas are also very different, being the Miami County Jail has two recreation rooms and Wabash County Jail only has one.…

The four types of prisons are federal, state, municipal, and military. A federal prison is operated and managed by the government. Federal prisons normally house inmates who have been convicted of a crime in violation of a federal statue as opposed to a state or local laws. A municipal prison is a high security prison. A military prison is a prison operated by the military. Military prisons are used to house prisoners of war, enemy combatants, those whose freedom is deemed a national security risk by the military or national authority and member of the military found guilty of a serious crime. A state prison is a facility operated by a state and used to house and rehabilitate criminals. There is both minimum and maximum security prisons which are divided based on the nature of the crime committed by inmates at the institution. A total institution is an enclosed facility separated from society and physically where the inhabitants share all aspects of their daily lives. Total institutions are small societies and evolve their own distinctive values and styles of life and pressure residents to fulfill rigidly prescribed behavioral roles. Some of these places include prisons, concentrated camps, mental hospital, seminaries, and other facilities in which individuals are cut off from society forcibly or willingly. Jails play an important role in the criminal justice system because it keeps offenders that committed a crime off the streets. Jails also help our community to be safe and there would be less violence. Jails are used as a form of punishment either short-term or long-term depending on how severe of the crime. Without jails in the criminal justice system crimes will be overrated and individuals that break the law will receive no punishments and will keep committing the crimes over and over…

After doing a bit of research myself and viewing different sources I have learned a few things about the different types of jails and prisons. Again I thought a jail was a jail. I’ve learned that Inmates are people who are held in an institution such as a prison or jail. They may have committed crimes, been captured in war, or been denied bail, leading to detainment until they can be tried in a court of law. Prisons typically range from minimum to maximum security, and are often…

However it wasn’t until the 1980’s where the private prison system as we know today was first established. Until this time privatization within the prison system existed in the form of services provided to the prison, whether it was medical, laundry, or food services provided, that was the extent of where privatization inside the prison system existed. However, the overall management of the prison system was always held by federal or state authorities until 1984, when a group of investors from Tennessee with close ties in the legislature recognized and took advantage of a business opportunity forming the now very profitable Corrections Corporation of America (CCA). Their main objective was to use venture capital to build a new prison and lease or rent their beds to the state in a profit earning endeavor almost like a hotel. CCA alongside the GEO Group are two of the largest “players” or firms in the privatized prison industry system.…

People convicted for a short sentence or trials, detainees, suspicious people under trials are kept under jail. Jail has fewer amenities for its convicts as compared to a prison. It only provides the basic necessities of food, housing and safety to the prisoners. Jails operate camps, vocational trainings and other work release programs for the prisoners. Jails are within the country where the individual is arrested. Typically they are intended to hold persons for less than one year.…

They are a huge contributing factor to the safety of our country and allow for proper and humane punishment for those who commit crimes. While America’s streets continue to be plagued by crime and dangerous people, prisons help significantly in decreasing the crime rate and removing those people from society in order to create a safer place for people to live. Although there are many pros that come with prisons, a handful of cons come with them as well, which allow for arguments to rise about whether prisons should be allowed in America or not. Prisons are a necessity in modern society that punishes and rehabilitates those who commit crimes with the purpose of protecting…
