Perseverance is the ability to remain calm and conquer any obstacle or difficulty lasting for a long time. Odysseus exhibits perseverance very well. Odysseus and his crew were returning from the Trojan War when a terrible storm blows them off course starting the 10 year long journey back to Ithaca. He went to 12 different islands before ending up back in Ithaca. A couple of these places are island of Cyclops, island of the Lotus-Eaters, island of king Aeolus, island of Circe, the Underworld, island of Sirens, and island of the Sun. A quote from Part 4, The Adventures of Odysseus stated that, “Seventeen days he journeyed without change of weather, always steering, never letting sleep close his eyes.”(Hamilton 301). This quote shows how Odysseus persevered through the harsh weather for seventeen days straight without an ounce of sleep. He finally returns to Ithaca to find that his wife was claimed by suitors. He disguised himself as a old beggar to reclaim his wife. To win her as their wife, they had to shoot Odysseus’s bow through 12 rings. None of the suitors could pull back the bow, so Odysseus tries and does it with ease.
