The HIQA is the independent authority, established in May 2007 to provide a high quality and safe care for people and this done by following a standards. These standards apply to all health service sectors, whether they are run by public, private or voluntary organizations. They give the service provider a framework to develop person centred care and this can be achieved by managing resources effectively, good leadership and experienced staff. People in a health care environment such as nursing homes should enjoy a good quality of life and live in a place that feels like their home; one that upholds their personal dignity and privacy. However, their social and personal care needs were not documented. Also, there were a huge challenges regarding resident’s safety, dignity and privacy, this was due to poorly structured building and the physical environment, there were not seats on some toilets, resident’s rooms were small and occupied where six residents sleep in one room with a limited space between the beds. Also, some of the wheelchairs were examined and they did not have foot plates on them. Standard 2.2 state that the location, design and layout of the centre should be suitable for its stated purpose and it is provided with appropriate equipment for staff and residents use. Standard 3.1 state that each resident safety and welfare should be promoted and that each person is assisted with knowledge and awareness needed for self-care and protection.
