Once a compromise was proposed, people that were not accepting of it made rash decisions. First, a retired British General was shot dead by a few IRA members. Then, pro-treaty forces arrested an anti-treaty officer, which led to more bickering and skirmishing. The quarrels led to the civil war. Ordinarily a war is against people that have not met each other, which tends to make the killing easier. Be that as it may, during a civil war everyone has their own view on what is happening and as a result, people that were once close get pulled away from each other. An example of this being, the sniper fought for one side while his brother had opposing beliefs that caused him to drift to the other. Sadly, the sniper could not foresee that the man who wounded him, that he terminated, was his brother.
The civil war caused so many changes within the country that seeing brother kill brother is very believable during this time period. The sniper is a real character in this story because he is in battle and gets wounded. War brings pain, loss, wounds, disease and many things that not every person will survive. Showing that the sniper was mortal enough to the point where he got shot in the arm is very credible. Friend turned on friend during civil wars all across the country, so it makes it plausible that a brother would also turn on
