Lifelong Learning in Pediatrics
According to Pauly-O'neill and Prion (2013) there are different educational opportunities ways to enhance the ways the nurses can continue their lifelong learning in the world of pediatrics. One approach to enhance ones’ education while learning a skill is to continuously practice the skill, which will enhance the nurses’ critical thinking skills, confidence and knowledge in said skill as stated by Pauly-O'neill and Prion (2013). Another approach is the process of learning through simulation, where the nurses can feel free to practice a skill without running the risk of causing harm to a patient (Pauly-O'neill and Prion, 2013). Furthermore, Pauly-O'neill and Prion (2013) discuss the opportunity to continue with your education in the classroom or online learning. According to Bueno (personal communication, November 16, 2016), the pediatric nurses are given multiple opportunities to enhance their knowledge thereby improving their skills, knowledge and competencies, which is an enhancer for all parties: for patient safety, the hospital, and the nurses.
Polices on Pediatric Safety Coral Springs Medical Center (CSMC) policy on pediatric safety according to Broward Health (2016) is to provide a focus on safety and quality.
The purpose of the policy is the incorporate safety in all aspect of care while on the pediatric units at CSMC hospital as stated by Bueno (personal communication, November 16, 2016). In order to bring this goal into fruition the pediatric clinical specialist and the pediatric nurse manager make daily rounds on each patient on the unit to ensure that all safety measures are implemented by the nurses and they will also make themselves available to discuss any issues that arise, how to solve said situation, the pro and con of the situation and any changes that needs to be implemented in the current pediatric policies (Perla Bueno, personal communication, November 16, 2016). It is apparent to this writer that the staff has a mutual respect for one another’s opinions and their communication within the group are effective towards their overall goal. It is the observation of this writer that the staff are willing to do what it take to ensure that their pediatric unit is running as smoothly as possible and that all personnel are performing at their optimum level. The staff are constantly educating the patient and their family members on a range of different topics from breastfeeding to reminders of not leaving a child unattended or how to administer an inhalant, it is the belief of this writer that the staff exude a great amount of …show more content…
patience, understanding and knowledge while performing their duties in a professional manner.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is the belief of this writer that the staff at CSMC exude a great amount of patience, understanding and knowledge while performing their duties in a professional manner.
A continuous goal of this writer is to gain an insight into leadership skills and to acquire the knowledge it will take to become a successful leader and motivator. This writer’s final professional goal for the RN-BSN practicum is to analyze the benefits of life-long learning in the world of pediatrics. The day for this writer was very informative because I am constantly learning. The next day of observation will be November 22, 2016, to complete the project that I am currently working on, due to technical issues I was unable to complete said
project.
