Rainsford took one look at the bed that was beside the two and decided that he would be the last man standing and he would the one sleeping in that bed tonight. Without thinking he quickly threw struck the general with a quick jab in the face before shoving him off balance onto the floor. However, the General recovered much quicker than Rainsford anticipated and he was up and in his fighting stance quicker than Rainsford could bat an eye.
“It takes much more to take down such an experienced and skilled fighter as I,” Zaroff taunted. “I have dealt with much more.”

He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided.
Rainsford awoke the next morning to knowing that he needed to get off the island. He was worn out, tired and all he wanted to do was to come home to his friends, Whitney, and just live a simple life in the states. This isn’t what he wanted, he wanted off the island as soon as possible. However, he wasn’t aware of how he was going to get off this island. He had no transportation or communication to the outside world. So he made the internal decision that he was going to stay in Zaroff’s house until he figured it out.
However, one day turned into a week, and a week turned into a month, and a month turned into 2. He had spent 2 months on Ship-Trap Island looking for a way to leave this terrible island and return to his home. He had needed food so he went hunting for food. He weaved his way around and about the bushy trees, tall grasses, and full grown bushes, doing his best to avoid little poisonous insects. Every day it wasn’t sunny but either raining or full on cloudy and the conditions weren’t ever really good on the island. It was almost just like a jungle that he was trying to live in and Rainsford didn’t want to continue making a residence there. He would look for little snake or reptile to eat and he would have berries that he would find in the bushes using his knowledge wildlife knowledge to figure out if they are poisonous or

“A certain coolheadedness had come to him…” (p.33). Although he had just fallen off the ship, “it was not the first time he had been in a tight place” (p.33). He knew he had to swim towards the gun shots to immediately get help and not panic about the situation. Throughout his battle with Zaroff he constantly said, “‘I must keep my nerve’” (p.173), trying to calm himself and not give up. If he had not calmed himself, he would've made an irrational move that could've led to his death. “Get ready, General Zaroff” (p. 204), Rainsford said before killing Zaroff. He was getting revenge for everything Zaroff had done and was not panicked about having to duel General Zaroff. As a result of Rainsford’s coolheadedness, he was able to conquer the obstacles he had to face.…

It was a relief when the ship started towards the shore of the tiny island to rescue them. The ship had floated up to the island, and the angels who saved them got off and walked over to the group. As soon as the two men got off the ship Rainsford recognized his saviors as none other than Whitney and the captain. “Rainsford, is that you?” Whitney yelled over the loud waves. A second reason why Rainsford would have annihilated Zaroff is because he wanted to escape the island forever. On the contrary, some people still might think that Rainsford would want to stay because in the very end, he slept in Zaroff’s bedroom and decided that “he had never slept in a better bed” (Connell 31). That tells that now Rainsford could possibly want to remain on the island and live out his life in Zaroff’s huge, comfortable, island mansion.…

Sanger Rainsford: is the protagonist. Sanger Rainsford, is an adventurous big-game hunter who confronts the nature of life and death for the first time in his life during his few frightening days on Ship-Trap Island. Calm and composed, Rainsford coolly handles any challenge, be it falling overboard in the middle of the night or having to swim several miles to reach the shore. Only during Zaroff’s relentless final pursuit does Rainsford truly feel fear and his own primal instinct to survive. Connell suggests that Rainsford now empathizes with the creatures he has hunted in the past, it is uncertain whether he will discontinue hunting in the future. On one hand, Rainsford could possibly abandon hunting altogether or at least approach it with a new respect for his prey. Conversely, Rainsford’s ability to sleep so soundly after killing Zaroff may suggest that he has become even more ruthless or hasn’t undergone any significant transformation at all.…
