Ever since Ralph got on the island his main goals were always apparent."If I blow the conch and they don’t come back; then we've had it. We shan’t keep the fire going. We'll be like animals. We'll never be rescued." (Golding 92) as you can see from this quote all of Ralphs intentions were clear, get rescued and do not become animals. His quote "Hasn't anyone got any sense? We've got to relight that fire. You never thought of that-" (Golding 102) Ralph really shows how he has the sense on the island and knows what he wants.
The main cause of the deaths on the island were because of fear and jack was the one who but this fear whereas Ralph says, "the bit we can all talk about, is deciding the fear" (Golding 82). Ralph knows fear can only be bad for everyone on the island so he does not want anyone think the beast is real. He could have averted these deaths if he took better leadership of Jack and the rest of Jack’s “tribe” but you can tell he tried because he often would try to affirm his leadership. For example he tries to assert authority in this quote, "I'm chief I was chosen" (Golding 91).
Ralph in my opinion was a great leader and made all the better decisions than Jack. Even the symbolic “intelligence” on the island, Piggy, thinks so when he says, "If Jack was chief he'd have all hunting and no fire!" (Golding 93). If i was leader i would make sure that Jack had no say and was not in charge of even a hunting group. Ralph knows Jack is wrong when he says, “Shut up Jack!” (Golding 95).
