Examples of this kind of admiration shows up many a times in his tales but one that I think shows this really well is in the Film Adaptation of his life ‘Ned Kelly’ which was directed by Gregor Jordan in 2003. When Ned had been wounded in his last stand and he was being patched up in the train infirmary we see two young boys jumping up and down in excitement saying “ Is that Ned Kelly” this shows us that Ned was admired by people of all ages young and old. When he was just 11 years old Ned Kelly only just a scrawny little boy dove into Hughes Creek and hauled up Richard Shelton and saved him from drowning. A ceremony was later held to mark Ned’s heroic act and he was presented with a Green sash, by Richard Shelton’s parents and family. Even as a boy Ned showed qualities of being a hero his ‘don’t think twice’ kind of attitude is one of the reasons he is controversially regarded as one of Australia’s greatest Heroes.
A person with noble qualities
People also admired Ned because they saw qualities in him that they wanted. They saw that he was a larrikin, a boisterous young man, often uncultivated but was good hearted.
They saw how he was loyal to the bone to those who supported him and his family, for example when he paid those people who had family members in jail because they kept their mouths shut about him. He was fearless and charismatic, with often little regard for his own life. Above all he was an underdog, he represented the people in the struggle, he embodied the suffering of everyone and he was the beacon of hope and freedom from oppression.
