In 1492 Columbus discovered the American continent, a year later the Spaniards were sent to settle the land, later called Hispaniola. The Hispaniola was populated with native people called Indians. These people were uncivilized and loyal to their Indian masters. The Indians believed the Spaniards were sent by God, they trusted them and were determined to serve them in the same way they did with their Indian masters. Spain’s conquest of the Americas was an outright tragedy because of the massive amount of Native deaths and the Spanish idea of cultural superiority and destruction of native culture.

They began looking for ways to force Europeans to leave their lands. They took up arms, but their weapons were not as powerful as the Europeans weapons. Bartolome de Las Casas wrote ‘’ Because of this, the wars of the Indians against each other are little more than games played by children. (14) As a matter of fact, Europeans were angry because of what Indian people wanted to do. They began to carry out massacres against them. Europeans were so cruel and naughty, they attacked the towns and without compassion they murdered Indian people without making distinctions’ between children, women or men. After the massacres had ended for the people who survived Europeans made them slaves. They made them do the hard work without giving them food except for herbs and legumes. The Europeans firmly believed that they had the right to conquer and colonize the New World. Europeans wanted to change Indians culture by using violence if it necessary. Columbus believed that because the Indians did not have a religion of their own, they had to believe in what the Europeans believed. Columbus felt that these natives needed to be freed from their culture and the Europeans would be able to do it without forcing them. As an effect of this conquest, many aspects of Indians culture were destroyed. Native Americans had a unique and singular culture and lifestyle unlike any other. They were divided into several tribes. Each tribe developed their own language, housing, clothing and other cultural aspects. They were architects, they built their own cities with their own hands but as the Europeans conquered, they introduced technology and farming methods.
