One of the main reason for the crusades was to take back their holy land which was Jerusalem. Two main religions fought for the ownership of Jerusalem and they were Christians and Muslims. The Pope Innocent III was trying to expand the holy Roman Empire and reclaim the holy land from the Islamic Empire. This event lead to the start of the first crusade which began in the year 1096. Another reason why people joined the crusade was that they through they were doing the will of God by fighting. “It was the duty of the nobility, who were blessed by God, to return the fruits of that blessing to God’s people and his church” (Madden Pg. 12). If you were unable to Go to war you should be able to help pay for it. The crusades were expensive and they did not discriminate who could go on it because it all depended on how willing you were to fulfill Gods purpose. Saladin captured Jerusalem in the battle of Hattin from the crusaders in the year 1187. This lost resulted in the empires third crusade to claim back Jerusalem. Richard attacked Saladin’s forces in the year 1191 at the battle of Arsuf. This resulted in the capture of the city of Jaffa but, he did not attack the holy city but instead singed a peace treaty. Each time Europe embarks on a crusade it always cost a large some of resources because they have to provide food and water for soldiers that are easily more than 150,000 people. This leaves their country in an economic crisis because they would be barely enough to keep the city going which may cause a great
