Gun control, the effort to regulate or control sales of guns, has been an issue in American politics for a very long time. It has especially become a topic for debate with all the recent tragedies events involving children with weapons. The government is now making an effort to ban sales of guns. According to the U.S. Constitution, the second amendment in the Bill of Rights states, “[a] well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” Many people can argue that there is no definitive answer as to what this amendment actually protects. Ownership, possession, and transportation of weapons are legal because the Bill of Rights states ones individual rights. Guns should not be banned from the United States for the following reasons, prohibition will not get rid of firearms, the purpose of firearms isn’t only to kill people, and guns protect people in self-defense situations. People are afraid of the tragedies that come from guns so they want to throw them away. The fact of the matter is that criminals will always have guns. Good guys with guns stop criminals during commission of their crimes. Good police with guns investigate after criminals commit crimes. When a real crime is being committed against you, which do you choose, a gun or a cop? A call to arms or a call to 911? Although a gun can kill a human, that is not it purpose it also serves as a means for self-defense.
