In the story of The Ransom of Red Chief, a boy about 10 years old gets kidnapped but it's not the ending you are thinking of. O’Henry’s short story “Ransom of Red Chief” is a low level comedy that uses comic characters and comic situations to convey the idea that sometimes things don't go the way you think they will

    The father and the boy wanted to forget all of the destruction from the apocalypse and so they decided to go to the beach. When they got to the beach, they were not surprised or impressed by the ocean. Instead they thought it was colorless and unpleasant. Since both the father and the son traveled for almost the whole day they were tired and so the boy slept in the tent but the father decided to take a swim. While the boy was asleep, he was unaware of his surroundings and of the dangers around him. Soon after the boy fell asleep a thief saw the opportunity to take the cart with all of their materials. In the story City of Orphans, Maks is selling papers and he finds a girl laying in an ally, when she wakes up she is wondering what happened. After Maks tells her, Bruno comes in the ally. As they are trapped in the ally, Willa pulls out a stick and starts to protect her and Maks. They get out of the ally and run to Maks’ house, and go inside to get away from Bruno. As they walk in, Maks’ mother had just finished making dinner and she asked Willa if she would like to stay and eat with them.
