Reflection And Analysis: The Hour/DNA
A reflection and analysis of my role as Assistant Stage Manager in the production of The Hour/DNA by Jordan Daughtry.

As part of the Performance Practice module, myself and my fellow students had to take part in two mainstage productions at Derby Theatre as either cast, crew or taking a dual role. Having the option to choose our desired role, I opted to take part as either a part of the cast or a member of the marketing team. When the roles were announced, I was assigned to the Marketing team and was given a brief overview of what was expected of me and the duties that I would have to carry out. Feeling apprehensive, I asked if someone else could take the responsibility at the time, allowing myself to observe and take notes as to how minutes were taken and volunteered to take the minutes for the next meeting. As time progressed and the production dates got closer I felt my workload increase, particularly sourcing props for The Hour as the play is prop-heavy and therefore needed a lot of attention on this matter. I felt that working on this production benefited me a lot more as I felt involved in the more hands-on way in which I initially wanted to. Although I started this new role several weeks in to the rehearsal process and did not know The Hour as well as I did DNA considerably well, I felt as though my determination to succeed in my job role enabled be to work to the best of my ability and eventually it did not take me long to learn the play in a lot more …show more content…

    My role in our Bunraku performance was co-director with Varia. A director takes on a variety of jobs. We worked with the producer, actors and designers (set, costume, make-up and lighting). If something goes wrong, it is your job to fix it. For our story to take place, we had to assign many various roles- Director, puppeteers, musicians, chanter/narrator, lighting, set design, puppet makers, props, script writer, producer and someone to cast people. All tasks were difficult and taken with great responsibility. The greatest challenge of being a director was getting people to focus and getting the right amount of effort out of them. Since we spent long hours rehearsing, people were tired and frustrated a lot, so having to yell and tell them what to do. Lots of notes were taken because actors, narrators and musicians forgot cues, tempo and the effort they had to put in so we had to tell them how to improve. It was a lot of stress because Varia and I had to find music, have a vision of what the stage should look like, tell the puppeteers how to move the puppets and the emotion they had to portray.…

    We approach the woman and she politely greets us revealing to us her true identity, the boss, who is the person in charge of relaying the rules to us. She informs us of the disqualifications, and the time limit of thirty five minutes our performance, Surviving Lunch, must be performed in. A total of ten minutes to set up and prepare for our first scene is the last bit of info she provides us with. In her hand she holds a timer, and as soon as the lady presses the button, Cimenski goes berserk. Like a military officer she spits out orders at us to prepare the first scene. Rushing, we haul the tables and lockers into their correct positions, and complete the task with plenty of time to spare. The lady wishes us luck and exits the stage. My mind goes blank, while we flush to the sides of the staging area hiding from the impatient audience. The lights shut off and blackness abruptly surrounds me. In an effort to adjust, my eyes blink rapidly. The black stage with black curtains. Black rubber flooring. Black backdrops. Dizziness floods my brain, and I struggle to not black out. Gradually light comes up, and the first line bellows throughout the large auditorium. Peeking out from my hiding spot, I see silhouettes of statues. In the far back, the light crew stands ready, their fingers on the controls. Glancing back at Mrs. Cimenski for reassurance, I notice a sickly green tint take over her face. This is due to the strong, extensive domination of film, television and new media, clearly eminent in the present entertainment industry.     Now a new challenge came as I had been given the duty of technical director, which meant I had to manage all the aspects of a theatrical production such as lighting the stage, researching sound effects, building sets, gathering and making props, designing and sewing costumes, publicizing the show and lastly managing the finances.
