Reflective Essay On Service Learning
Reflection on Service Learning

The Service Learning I have done on is Singapore International Water Festival and Hospice @ Polymarina. Certain SP core values can be applied to these two events.

The SIWF is a water event that provides family entertainment, excitement and an enriching educational experience, not forgetting that we are fortunate to have water resources. Thus, we should have the responsibilities to save water and be environment-friendly. We could start by doing small things, for example, using the water for washing clothes on cleaning the toilets. All these could not be a success if there is no teamwork involved. In this case, almost all the competitions held in this event needs teamwork. Teamwork

The elderly are invited to the Polymarina to enjoy a day out and we are there to accompany them. We interact and entertained them throughout the day. I tried to speak their dialects when we are in a conversation as it will be more amiable. The smile on their faces brightens up my day when they shared things about them to us and we shared ours too. I have learnt how to spread my care and concern too. The elderly are god’s creations who are destined to fight illness which they had different kind of cancers. It takes a lot of courage to fight an illness despite knowing that their lives are going to end soon. It seems that the illness have no influences on them as they looked optimistic about it. They did not give up on themselves, so we should also try our best to help them and make every day an interesting day they would anticipate. They had inspired me to be optimistic about everyday and we should treasure and cherish every precious moments when we are with our families or friends. Things would be better if we take a break and see how wonderful the world is. They are our role models as they are brave warriors towards their enemy. Although it is heartrending to see their present state, I hope the best for them and they would overcome their

~Mahatma Gandhi. Service is to help others in need or not in need. I am excited to try to do even more service in the future. I have many ideas for the school when it comes to service. One idea is to help children in hospitals by just making them something like a card or decoration. My dad is working with a company that is rebuilding St. Peter’s Hospital and I know that some of the kids in the children’s section of the hospital would love something to cheer them up. Right now for service I give my old clothes and toys to my younger cousin and if she doesn’t want them, we take them to the Salvation Army. Also like I had mentioned in the first paragraph we donate over three or four hundred dollars a year to the WGY Christmas wish organization. That money goes to poor families so the parents can buy presents or food for their children. I know I need to work on this skill in particular but I have many good…

I missed them so much but could not hug them. Teaching can be challenging and rewarding if you enjoy what you are doing, if you don’t enjoy what you teach then it can become boring, it soon rubs off on your learners and gives the impression of “If the tutor isn’t interested, then why should I be?” It can also be boring, but this is where the challenge begins to make it fun so that the learner understands what is being taught without loosing interest quickly.…

I am currently completing my service learning at Martin Luther King Elementary School working with children ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade in an after school program. This program provides the children with a safe and comforting place to do their homework, hangout with their friends, and get a snack. Since I am just getting to know these children I do not know everything about them and their background, so I do not have a lot of examples that relate back to the class work we do. In class I feel as if a lot of the material we focus on relates back to the parents, home life, and how they have been raised thus far. I only see them once a week, so I cannot make judgments regarding their course of development and influences that have left impacts on their life. The two examples that I have noticed that we have covered in class include Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory and The Ecological Systems Theory. I have noticed elements of the Sociocultural Theory in the children’s dialogue. Considering their age the children have a very advanced dialogue with rather colorful language. Personally, I was not even familiar with some of these words that Kindergarteners and 1st graders are expressing. I think this has to do with the culture they were raised and possibly the community. I think that the Kindergarteners at the school pick up on language that is used by the older kids and then they start to say it. Although teachers and administrators try their best to stop the kids from using bad language and reprimanding them when they do I feel as if the colorful language they have come to know is forever imbedded in their brain. I think the Ecological Systems Theory plays a big role in understanding these children and the school I am working at. For me it was rather different to go into a school like this in a bad neighborhood and see children behaving in ways that I had never seen before. However, for the teachers that work there are so used to it they don’t even…

As a childminder I work towards EYFS and meet Every Child Matters in everything I do. I would like children in my care achieve as much as they can so I start the learning and development process from torough talk to parents before child starts attending to my setting to find out child’s likes, dislikes, abilities, achievements. Then I do observe, asses particular child and plan activities following his interest, abilities, individual achievements, background. The important part of my observation is child’s response to activities provided to make sure he/she enjoys learning. I look after 3 children at the moment. I see they eyes, they body moving to the music while we listen children music from cd and use music instruments so I can be sure he enjoys. Also I am so happy…

I decided to start volunteering at the local humane society because I’ve always been really passionate about animals and wanted to start benefiting them in the community. Prior to my service I was delighted because I’ve wanted to start volunteering for years and was glad the opportunity had presented itself. Throughout my experience I learned a great deal and met a lot of new people. Even though I’ve only just started serving my time at the Fox Valley Humane Association I can truly see the difference it has made in the community.…

The special opportunity I felt that I had this semester from this class is the service learning at the harvest table. This experience was humbling and eye opening. It can be hard to remember that there are so many people out there that are struggling financially. I could have these children in my class and not even know it. From this experience, I was able to interact with a few children and see that they are just as capable as any child. I think about the book that we read for this class as well when I think of this service learning experience. One thing I learned from the book is that teachers aren’t “teaching” African American children or the children with low economic status. I hope from this experience and reading this book that…

This assignment will critically reflect and analyse a microteaching session I presented to my peers in a clinical placement regarding Nursing management of chest drains. I will define reflection; teaching, learning and the rationale for choosing this topic will be clearly outlined in this paper. The preparation, planning, implementation and evaluation will also be incorporated. This assignment will be structured using Gibbs (1988) reflective model cited in Modular Training Course, 2003 because of its simplicity. Analysis will permeate through each stage of the Gibbs reflective model. Finally I will conclude by reflecting on my role as a joint practitioner outlining areas of personal, professional growth, identifying my strength, weakness and put forward an action plan for my future development in teaching.…
