Frederick Douglas once said “Education means emancipation. It means light and liberty. It means the uplifting of the soul of man into the glorious light of truth, the light by which men can only be made free.” The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation can be the foundation to which I build my education and further my goals. This scholarship will help me with the cost of attending San Jose State University and allow me to focus on my education than worrying about how I will pay for college. Education had been a hallmark in my family ever since I was in Jamaica. My mother was not able to attend school when she was younger, but she made sure that I had the opportunity to go to school no matter what. That is a promise she makes to my older sister and I that she will always find a way to send us to school. I took that to heart and saw all the sacrifice that my
The reason for this is because I did not Like to read as a kid, and that hold me back from doing many things. I did not see the importance of reading until I came to the American as saw that to be someone in this country you need and education and I was not going to be a person that failed here. I made it my mission to get the best education I can and can something of my life and the best way I saw that I could do that is through being a teacher for the next generation. I started my teaching journey early by working at my former high school as a Teacher’s aide and the Computer Lab Proctor. This position has given me the ability to work closely with students to understand the necessary steps to prepare me for a classroom of my own. I am also setting an example for my Verbum Dei brother of different ways to reaching their goals in life. This position is also a leadership role as well because I can share my experience of what I learned at Verbum Dei High School and from my college experience at Los Angeles Southwest
