This reflective report has been structured following Gibbs’ (1988) model. Gibbs’ model provides an iterative model of reflection which I am going to use to answer a series of ordered questions: the answer to each question leads onto the next stage of the reflective cycle.
Description
I will be discussing an incident that occurred while I was on duty in a nursing home where I work as a healthcare assistant. A nurse confronted a carer in an unprofessional manner during handover regarding an instruction she had given her to carry out during the day. At the time, I felt what the nurse had done was inappropriate and could have done it better.

I thought that this was the right course of action as the nurse may not have been aware of how she spoke to the carer. The line manager further elaborated that this was a breach of the company’s code of practice. It is important to maintain professionalism in the workplace as it displays respect among many other vital aspects. An incident report was made by my line manager for future reference. She also discussed the incident with the nurse the next day who acknowledged that she was wrong to have confronted the carer in front of people and apologized. Counselling should be provided for the carer to ensure her well-being in the workplace is in check; management should also hear her side of the story. Reflecting on this scenario has taught me a lot. Individuals benefit a lot from working together and learning how to do so. (Ghaye,
2005). Management should also provide training such as Continuous Professional Development, to enhance staffs’ phronesis enabling them to deal with different situations if need be. I have also recognized that I need to develop the confidence to challenge the practice of colleagues in situations like these, to be as assertive as I can be without provoking other people; all those involved should continue to feel acknowledged and not ‘put down’ or humiliated.
