I am currently completing my third year at Ryerson University in the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program, working towards my ultimate goal of completing my BScN and becoming a Registered Nurse. My clinical experiences thus far have been in long-term care, acute care, and community care settings. While working in acute care, I was placed at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, specifically in their Gastrointestinal Surgical Oncology Unit. While I was there I had the opportunity to develop a wide-range of professional skills, including clinical …show more content…
skills and communication skills. The surgical environment allowed me to develop my expertise in head-to-toe assessments while the oncological environment allowed me to enhance my communication skills by building meaningful therapeutic relationships with the clients. Since the unit specializes in the gastrointestinal system, I improved my critical thinking skills by constantly evaluating my patient’s electrolytes and lab values, vital signs, incision sites, and post-operative progress to determine if their condition was improving or declining. As my nursing skills improved, my patient load increased, which provided me with the skills necessary to prioritize my patients and organize the day based on medications, surgical procedures, and imaging appointments.
In addition to my clinical placements, I have had the opportunity to develop a wide-range of skills while working in the home-care environment as a personal support worker and being an aquatic instructor/lifeguard for the Town of Ajax.
Home-care has taught me how to work independently from my colleagues and focus my attention on delivering client-centred care. The home-care environment exposed me to a wide variety of chronic illnesses and helped me develop excellent time-management skills, as I would have to visit on average 4 to 5 clients per shift following their set time schedules. Working as a swimming instructor provided me with a strong foundation in both communication skills and instructional strategies. This job required me to teach toddlers, children, teenagers, and adults within one shift. As a result, I learned how to communicate with individuals across the lifespan and identify areas for improvement in their swimming techniques while providing feedback in a way each client would understand. The lifeguarding aspect of the job required me to constantly scan the pool area for environmental hazards to ensure patrons remained safe while swimming. In addition, I spent a great deal of time administering first-aid, and on the rare occasion performing
CPR.
I believe a relationship with Lakeridge Health would be mutually beneficial as I am seeking an opportunity to utilize my skills to the fullest extent in a challenging work environment before entering my final year in nursing. With regards to my current knowledge and professional goals, I would appreciate your consideration for a position in either surgery or oncology. I look forward to hearing from you, and would love to explain my skills and experiences further during an interview. Please find a detailed account of my work history in the attached resume.
Sincerely,
Ariana Sanchez
