I started the interview by finding out how Mr. Kautz progressed to his current position as a nurse practitioner. He didn’t originally plan on becoming a nurse practitioner. Initially he obtained his Bachelors in Pre-Med from Florida Southern and began by volunteering in the emergency room. While volunteering, he discovered that he didn’t want to become a doctor, so he decided to go to nursing school and obtain his registered nurse license. After working at Lakeland Regional Hospital for a little bit, he decided he wanted to posses a wider range of privileges and went back to school to obtain his Masters in nursing. After obtaining his ARNP, he spent some time traveling the country participating in strike nursing. Strike nursing is basically where registered nurse practitioners are hired to participates in strikes for the purpose of progressing legal limits on the field of nurse practitioners. Kautz further solidified my decision to continue on to become a nurse practitioner. I came to a better understanding of the process for acquiring a job following school and what kind of skills provide the best opportunity in the health care field as a nurse practitioner.
