Report to the head of computer science department about the increasing use of laptops in the university.
From: A.B.C.
Subject: Increasing use of laptops INTRODUCTION: I have noticed that use of laptops have been increased in our university specially in computer science department as, almost every student got his own laptop from Shahbaz Shareef laptop scheme .It has some disadvantages in addition to advantages.
ADVANTAGES:
1) Internet - by having access to the internet, you are then enabled to come up with past course material on the spot . 2) Notes - you are also likely to find that the notes that you make are clearer, and can obviously save you time and effort when they might need to be edited for corrections rather than having to be completely re-drafted. 3) Mobility - as all the information is , the actual amount of stuff you have to carry in and out of lectures can be significantly reduced as most of what you have come up with has been typed up on the laptop and isn't in an ever growing folder that has to be lugged about. 4) Tools - with the laptop you have been provided with a numerous amount of tools from on the spot calculators, and then with the internet your laptop provides you with thousands more. 5) Searching - when you have typed up information it is rather simple to find the exact notes you are looking for, where as when you are faced with paper it is often difficult (unless you have organised them well, which is time consuming in itself) to find quickly what you are after.
DISADVANTAGES:
1) Internet - although I have mentioned this in the advantages for using a laptop in university lectures, it could also potentially be your biggest disadvantage also. If you are easily distracted, the laptop will be a very tempting source to just check social networking sites, email, play games.

2) Type Speed - another issue is the speed of your note taking, are you faster writing notes or are you faster

Although the laptop is a good tool for learning, it can also distract other students in the classroom. Based on the presentation, students who use laptop would likely spend time multitasking and distracts other students from learning. It also states that people who multitasking can affect other students to be distracted and unfocused on the study or taking notes. Students who use laptop would likely type the same thing the teacher says and would likely take more note. In contrary, students who take notes by hand would likely use their own words and process the note they were taking. Thus, students who use laptop do not process their note deeply as hand note takers. As results, they would likely do poorly on a quiz or a test.…

If we got laptops for PCS, most students would concentrate more. They would concentrate more because they would have information right under their noses. Also we as a school wouldn't kill as much trees if we had laptops. Students would be more focused and class would go through smoothly because you wouldn't have to pass out papers. You could have it sent to your files or you could look it up on the internet. It would take less time out of class. If the teacher asked them to look up something for class, you could just search it and there it is. I do think though that if we got…

    * Even though a teacher and textbook is the best way to succeed in a class, a student only has access to a teacher for about45 minutes, and even then, if every other student, let's say there's 23 students, asks for help from the teacher and takes 2 minutes, that means that it is very likely that a student won't get access to the teacher, but on the other hand, the internet is always available.…

Getting an education is as simple these days as turning on your laptop and taking classes online. Although it's not your traditional classroom, the kind housed with a roomful of students seated in wooden desks and a professor lecturing in the front of the room, it is nonetheless an effective alternative to a good education. Even though you may be curled up on your…

The most comprehensive note taking systems require attention on your part. You must be alert enough in class to take legible, meaningful notes. You can't rely on "writing everything down" because a lot of information in a given lecture won't help you actually learn the material. If you have problems determining the specific relevant points in a particular class, you can always ask the professor to clarify them for you.The 2-6 Method: The 2-6 refers to the way you divide the space on your notepaper. Make two columns, using the red line on the left of the page as your border. Then, when you take notes in class, use the 6 column for the notes and the smaller 2 column on the left as a highlighting system. Write main headings and important points on the left, including material you think you will be tested on. When you're finished, you should have a comprehensive page of information that you can quickly scan for important points. Studying is 99% perspiration; if you give it a real, concentrated effort over the course of a semester you will see an improvement. Your academic success is entirely up to you.…

I have learnt that just listening to whatever it is we are talking about or reading has been very useful because it makes remembering the content easier. I have also found that I am better at writing assignments with a very specific structure. Structures such as SEEEC and introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and conclusion help me a lot when writing because it allows you to know exactly what you have to write next without having to figure out what goes in between. I also have found that highlighting my notes is very effective because it makes it easy to find the main points quickly when going back to it. It also allows me to listen to the teacher while finding the important…
