My name, Madeleine, is the French version of Magdalene (Magdala) and means “tower” in Hebrew. It has mainly been used since the 19th century. It also means high “tower” or elevated, great or magnificent. I really love my name; it makes me feel important. One of the main reasons my parents picked this name because they wanted great and magnificent things for me in my life.
My parents wanted to name me Madison, but it was already taken by my cousin. Our moms were competing to see who had a daughter first and they did. A few people, including my parents, shorten it even more to Mad which really annoys me. Something that really bothers me is when people misspell my name by using the English version which is Madeline. Whenever I go to a gift shop and see personalized items like pens, stationery, mugs, license plates, and wallets, the names are always spelled the English way. People also misspell and mispronounce my last name, Moudy, too. My mom, who is an elementary school teacher, gets frustrated because it should be pronounced like the word cloud and is a first grade reading skill.
Since I am Catholic, I really love my name because it is the same name as my favorite saint, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat. She was the patron saint of my old school Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, my school of 10 years. It’s a really great school.
