This quotation from Homer’s The Iliad comes from Hector, the strongest and longest standing trojan fighter, as he dies when fighting in the Trojan War. He speaks his desire to be remembered and praised as a hero, which Homer eventually made possible. Everyone has heard of the Trojan War, but not everyone agrees on whether it truly happened or not. Archaeological findings along with historical and literary evidence suggest the Trojan War actually happened.
The Trojan War was a battle between the people of Troy and those of Mycenaean Greece, although many argue on whether the war actually happened. It is believed that during the rule of emperor Augustus Caesar, Rome worked hand in hand with Troy. New excavations show the Romans rebuilt Troy after its fall as a cultural and religious shrine and sanctuary for Roman celebration. This shrine is believed to have been visited by Homer, the author of The Odyssey and The Iliad. Along with that, what was identified as a Roman council house was discovered in the ruins along with a Roman theatre. The Trojans also dominated a major trade route and therefore obtained wealth and power, helping it become the size it was. Not only did the dates of those weapons coincide with the dates of the war, but there’s evidence of a large kingdom that was destroyed around 1180 BC. Ten settlements were found and the strongest of all seems to have been the sixth which dates back to roughly 1700- 1275 BC, one new settlement coming from the Black Sea
