Resistance to change is caused by self interest, misunderstanding and distrust and a general intolerance for change. People resist change out of self interest because they fear that change will cost or deprive them of something they value. Resistance to change is natural and inevitable, managers need to unfreeze resistance to change to create successful change programs. Resistance often occurs when one firm buying another firm or a firm enters totally new market with their existing employees or the changes made by the management are hard to follow to employees they resist the changes. The five techniques that a manager can use to manage resistance to change are Education and Communication, Participation, Negotiation, Top management support and Coercion (Williams & McWilliams 2010/2012).
