In Chapters One and Two in Public Speaking Handbook Fourth Edition by Steven A. Beebe and Susan J. Beebe. The most important concepts in chapter one are: Empowerment, Employment, and Communication as Action. (Source, message, channels, receiver, and noise) In chapter two the most important concepts are: Know your audience, know your introduction and conclusion, and look for positive support. Having empowerment is one of the most important thing to have to being a successful speaker because it give you the confidence and competence you will need to have when giving a public speech in front of a big crowd. Another important thing to have when giving a speech is employment. Employment is important as a public speaker because if a speaker does not have employment then he or she cannot speak well or maintain a skill that other will highly value. Communication is Important because if you are communicating with someone and you conversation is failing you will know what part is failing due source, message, channels, receiver and noise. Due to knowing which part is failing on your conversation you can fix. Knowing your audience is if not most important thing it is the key thing to learn when you are giving a speech, because if you know your audience when giving a speech you will know how to keep them entertained in your speech, keep their attention on the topic you are talking about. If you know your introduction and your conclusion then you have memorized 2/3 of your speech. Also knowing your introduction and conclusion takes the fear away when getting to the “meat” of your topic. When giving a speech it is best to find someone who is nodding there head in agreement, when you have found someone who is giving you positive support then you know that you are doing a good job and you can keeping looking at them throughout the entire speech.
