1857 was a time when reading and writing were specific luxuries for children, and for children of color it was described as a type of crime. One-hundred and fifty years later, the voices of the educators and individuals who were involved with the association were heard and over millions of children were granted the opportunity to attend public school for the very first time. From there, this association has evolved throughout the Civil war, and through the hard times of the Great Depression. For some time education was at a standstill when others rose to join in segregation, but that would soon change.
